Tadej Pogacar enjoyed the triumph and celebrated as he crossed the finish line in Rome for the 2024 Giro d’Italia victory. He won with the largest margin of election since the early sixty years.
The 21 stages of the 3,400-kilometer race that started in Turin saw the 25-year-old UAE Emirates rider, taking the lead in six of the stages. Daniel Martinez of Bora, Colombia, was the next best rider and he finished the race 9 minutes and 56 seconds behind Pogacar. Finishing third, 10 minutes and 24 seconds behind the winner, was Geraint Thomas from Ineos.
Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier claimed his third stage victory in the 2024 Giro on Sunday and clinched the overall title in the 21st stage held in Rome.
As a future champion, Pogacar proved that he is a cut above the rest. In the second stage, he took the lead and continued to excel in the subsequent stages through the challenging stages with peaks, plains, and breathtaking views, with the largest winning margin of any Grand Tour in cycling since Vittorio Adorni’s 11 minutes and 26 seconds victory in the 1965 Giro d’Italia.
"I felt strong and relaxed these three weeks," Pogacar stated he felt relieved and happy, and he would go back to Rome and celebrate with his teammates, followed by a few days of relaxation at the beach. "It has been a wonderful experience. I loved it."
Pogacar's goal to follow in Marco Pantani's footsteps and become the first rider to win the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia in the same year made me think of another legendary rider in cycling, Eddy Merckx, who was consumed with taking home race stages.
After winning the first time trial, Pogacar went on to dominate the first significant summit finish the next day. His victory at the Dolomites' Queen stage effectively doubled his lead, and he maintained his form.
Tadej Pogacar celebrates the victory of the 2024 Giro d’Italia in Rome after crossing the finish line. In his victory he achieved the largest lead since over fifty nine years of the election.
Out of the 21 stages of the 3,400-kilometer race starting in the Italian city of Turin, the 25-year-old UAE Emirates rider clinched six victories, thereby emerging as the contest’s clear winner. Daniel Martinez of Bora, Colombia concludes the race 9 minutes and 56 seconds behind the awesome performance of Pogacar. The third place was taken by Geraint Thomas from the Ineos team who finished 10 minutes and 24 seconds behind the winner.
Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier claimed his third stage win in the 2024 Giro on Sunday, winning the general classification in the race during the last round around Rome.
Being regarded as one of the future champions, Pogacar confirmed the expectations. However, in Stage 2 he took the overall lead that extended to his victory through mountains, hills and beautiful landscape, which has become the largest winning margin in any Grand Tour cycling since Vittorio Adorni’s 11 minute and 26 second victory in the 1965 Giro.
Pogacar said he is relieved and happy and he will celebrate this victory together with his colleagues in Rome and then he will take few days and go and relax on the beach which is nearby.
The given intention of Pogacar to become the first rider since Marco Pantani in 1998 who would win both Tour de France and Giro d’Italia concurrently reminded more of another legend – Eddy Merckx who was famous for his pursuit of stage victories.
If Pogacar succeeds in achieving the Giro-Tour de France double he will become the next in line of the Greatest riders to have graced cycling such as Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain, and Marco Pantani.
The rise to prominence of Pogacar was meteoric. In the 2019 Vuelta a España, he took part in the race for the first time; he won three stages and finished in the third place. To be specific, one of the greatest underdog victories of cycling history was achieved by him in the following year. Finishing 1 minute and 30 seconds behind Primoz Roglic on the eve of the last days of the 2020 Tour de France, he came back from behind and clinched the race that he so desired.
Pogacar successfully defended his Tour de France title in 2021, proving once again that he rules the race. However, one of the prominent climbers that challenged Pogacar was Jonas Vingegaard of Team Jumbo-Visma, a Danish rider.
Especially on the most difficult Mountain stages, the agile and determined Vingegaard proved himself to be Pogacar’s strongest rival. While Vingegaard preserved his attention on the GC, Pogacar took stage victories.
Eddy Merckx, the god of cycling, declared Vingegaard as the current generation’s number one Grand Tour racer in 2023. The Danish champion, however, had a setback this season after a serious accident at the tour of the Basque Country and is now in a hurry to get into shape before the start of the Tour de France.
In the Giro, Pogacar had no credible rivals to contend with, but in the Tour de France that is not the case. The Dane is no longer a dubious presence on the French roads after shaking off a recent collision. Other dangers are represented by Primoz Roglic – Pogacar’s competitor in the previous Tour; the unpredictable Belgian wild card Remco Evenepoel; and the consistent Colombian climber Egan Bernal. Such an intense and varied team guarantees an action-packed July that will bring shocks and numerous fierce battles.
