Pogacar Seizes Yellow Jersey, Vauquelin Triumphs in Stage Two

Pogacar Seizes Yellow Jersey, Vauquelin Triumphs in Stage Two

After a powerful move away from the leading pack, Vauquelin secured his maiden Grand Tour stage victory. The Arkea-B&B Hotels rider was the second French winner of the 2024 event.

The UAE-Team Emirates rider Tadej Pogacar demonstrated a strong character on the 199 km distance. The last climb into Bologna, Italy of the 2 km stage. But he took along Jonas Vingegaard, the previous year winner and his closest competitor at that.

Vingegaard and Pogacar finished first astride, for Visma-Lease a Bike. However, Pogacar wore the yellow jersey for the first stage due to his excellent showing.

When asked if he aimed for the stage win, Pogacar replied:"We just left it to natural selection and it was like this in the end. For sure to have gone for the stage win could have also backfired so we decided to be more calm and tranquil, but in the final I tried to test myself."

"No, because the breakaway was too hard and in this weather, this heat, it would be unnecessary to kill my team-mates.

Now they have the same overall time , Pogacar and Vingegaard, who have won the last four La Grande Boucle races. Joining them are Remco Evenepoel of Soudal-Quick Step from Belgium and Richard Carapaz of EF Education-Easy Post from Ecuador.

Pogacar finished 21 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and 39 seconds ahead of the 19 riders competing for the general classification, including Roglic who had a bad day. This list included the Yates brothers, Simon and Adam, Romain Bardet, who won the stage on Saturday, and the Ineos Grenadiers duo, Carlos Rodriguez, Egan Bernal, as well as Tom Pidcock.

After helping his Ineos Grenadiers teammates Carlos Rodriguez and Egan Bernal, the 2018 champion Geraint Thomas stayed more than four minutes behind the race leaders.

The cyclists will be looking forward to a tough test on Monday as the stage will include a hard 230. Organised on an 8km course from Plaisance to Turin. Much anticipation exists that the stage will climax in a thrilling time trial. The popular Mark Cavendish stands a great opportunity to set records and potentially capture thirty-five Tour de France stages. In the forthcoming stages we are looking forward for a nail biting battle between the strengths of the peloton in the terms of speed and the capabilities to position itself well for a good sprint finish.
