Primoz Roglic Clinches Record-Equaling Fourth Spanish Vuelta Title with Dominant Performance

Primoz Roglic Clinches Record-Equaling Fourth Spanish Vuelta Title with Dominant Performance

In the final stage of the Spanish Vuelta, the individual time trial on Sunday, Primoz Roglic was the winner for the fourth time. At the correct speed, Roglic finished the 24. 50The 6-kilometer (15. 3-mile) race and successfully held on to the lead without coming across further threats. This was going to translate to the championship since he had over two minutes lead on other riders.

Roglic triumphed with a two minutes and 36 seconds advantage over the previous leader, Australia’s Ben O’ Connor, who was dominating the race for almost two weeks and thus, ended the year’s last Grande Parte with great style. Enric Mas finished the third, over three minutes behind Roglic although he was unable to reduce the gap to the top two during the race.

"It's a lot of sacrifice. It's not only me. My family, everyone around, we all sacrifice dearly for this. I just feel happy that I can do it. I really appreciate the support that I get." Roglic said, "I wanted to finish it off. It was tough but everything went fine and I'm happy"

In the final time trial, Roglic placed second behind the stage winner, Stefan Küng of Switzerland with a 31 second differential. While Roglic was not present on the stage to witness the history, he made his mark by drawing parallel with the legendary Roberto Heras with four titles in Vuelta a España. The Slovenian rider had already won the title in 2019, 2020, and 2021, and with this latest triumph, his reign in the sport has become even more solidified.

“Yeah – I mean, not really, but not the best also,” Roglič said. “It is how it is. Like I said, I don’t want to discuss really much about it. I just finished it off all fine and I’ll enjoy it.”

Tadej Pogacar another magnificent Slovenian rider established himself as the master of Grand Tours earlier this year by winning the Tour de France and Giro d’ Italia. Consequently, Roglic clinched his first Vuelta title since the switch in his first year with Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe after transferring from Jumbo Visma. This victory underscored the dominance of Slovenia in the sport and added more spice to the rivalry of the two riders on cycling’s biggest stage.

Olympic champion Roglic, who won gold in the individual time trial at the summer Olympics in Tokyo, could not achieve the year start he had wished for, but he progressively reduced the gap to O’Connor. His determination was rewarded when, on Friday, Soler came out of several unfinished races featuring steep climbs as the winner of the red leader’s jersey.

This Vuelta unlike previous ones concluded with a tough time trial instead of a traditional ride to Madrid to mark the end of the event. In most cycling traditions, the etiquette requires that the rival team should not engage in chasing the team in the front especially on the final day of competition, well this one kept everyone on the edge until the last turn of the crank.

Roglic said winning a fifth Vuelta next year "would be nice, it's never enough, but four is already crazy."

“It’s normal that you have ups and downs: we’re human beings,” Roglič said as dusk fell over Madrid on Sunday evening. “The most important thing is that you always focus on the task that you have, it’s the only thing you can control.”
