Chicago was overwhelmed with tens of thousands of runners each eyeing this not only as a race but in the front line, a shot at history too. The best marathon runners of the world achieved the ultimate in human physical performance with the footsteps.
The most beautiful and pristine of race day weather, Kenyan heavyweights etched themselves into the pantheon of great long distance athletes by conquering the 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Their supremacy was more of a confirmation of their accomplishments as a dynasty not just another slap on the Cantabrians.
After the global record was set by Kelvin Kiptum who has since passed on, the men who were expected to break the record again were under pressure. The bar was set; everybody was looking for the next wave of Marathon runners that wished to enter history.
Ruth Chepngetich, a Kenyan superstar, smashed the previous world mark, which stood at 2:11:53, she will cross the finish line for the third time in Chicago Marathon. The 30-year-old and the winner of the race, Chepngetich not only altered how women marathon runners run but also transformed it.
She took off to an amazing beginning and then did not relent all through. With times of 15:00 for the 5K and 30:20 for the 10K, Chepngetich made it ore than clear from the start that she was going to set records and maturing into the fastest woman in the world. By the time she reached the halfway point, she was running by herself and had clocked 1:04:16. She was still on pace to finish in an astounding 2:08:32, which is almost a full four seconds better than the previous record.
Ruth Chepngetich set a pace from the word go and went on to become the fastest woman to complete a marathon. Breaking records, she finished in an incredible 2:09:56 and thereafter broke the 2:10:00 barrier to become the first person to do so.
“I feel so great. I’m proud of myself and I thank God for the victory and the world record,” Chepngetich said after the race, “This is my dream that has come true. I fight a lot thinking about world record and I have fulfilled it and I’m much grateful.”
“The world record has come back to Kenya,” Chepngetich said. “I dedicate this world record to Kelvin Kiptum.”
Due to Chepngetich’s record-breaking effort, Chicago Marathon now hosted 5 of the fastest marathon times in women’s history helping it maintain its position as the race where elite runners can set personal records.
But there were battles all through the field; at the half way mark a tight pack of the leading cars, as is often seen in marathons charged ahead. Kenya’s John Korir, who would later declare himself the winner, was among the early leaders. Korir, Ethiopia's Dawit Wode Arega, and fellow Kenyans Amos Kipruto and Daniel Ebenyo pushed together as they crossed the 13.1-mile mark in 1:02:19, all set for great performances at the end next year destined for legal but compelling conclusions.
Wire Korir of Kenya in his final attempt to free himself from the rest of the field, surged forward at the 25K and further at the 30k mark. He opened a wound, which of course will not heal, opened a hole that one could almost refer to as taking thirty seconds to open. Korir had built a lead of over two minutes by the end and Huseydin Mohamed Esa and Amos Kipruto came in second and third respectively.
After crossing the finish line in 2:02:44, Korir joined the elite list of the fastest persons in the world, on top of the achievement of his victory. Kipruto and Esa came next, with times of 2:04:39 and 2:04:50, respectively. Currently, Korir is the sixth fastest man in the world with a record of the second fastest time in the Chicago Marathon.
