Serbia plans to Steps Back on Euro Withdrawal Threat as UEFA Prepares Disciplinary Action Against Croatia and Albania for 'Kill the Serb' Chants

Serbia plans to Steps Back on Euro Withdrawal Threat as UEFA Prepares Disciplinary Action Against Croatia and Albania for 'Kill the Serb' Chants

A provoking chant that was sung during Croatia’s match against Albania on the Wednesday night at the Euro 2024 match held in Hamburg, the Football Association of Serbia has penned a letter to UEFA’s Secretary General, Theodore Theodoridis. The Serbian association expressed indignation in a letter written on Thursday describing it as a shameful joint chanting by fans of both national teams, against the Serbian nation and its people in general. "shameful joint chanting by fans of both national teams, directed against the Serbian nation as a whole." The slogan was "kill, kill, kill the Serb," According to RTS/PTC interviews with Serbian officials on Wednesday evening, the general secretary of the Football Association of Serbia, Jovan Šurbatović, threatened his country might withdraw from the tournament. UEFA promptly came out on Thursday and stated that it has dispatched an inspector to investigate a match between Albania and Croatia that reportedly involved ‘possible racist and/or discriminatory conduct by the supporters’. “What happened is scandalous and we will ask UEFA for sanctions, even if it means not continuing the competition,” Šurbatović said, according to RTS. Serbia in their second game of the euro 2024 in Group C against Slovenia was played earlier Thursday this week. It turned out to be a draw 1-1 was the final score keeping Serbia’s chances alive for the next round. Meanwhile, Albania, in the second match, tied with Croatia 2-2 on Wednesday. National hatereds seen in current factions of Croats and Albanians have been as a result of the war in Balkans in the 1990s especially concerning Kosovo which was an earlier part of Serbia but is predominantly inhabited by Albanians. The Football Association of Serbia also sent a letter to UEFA to claim that such a “rampage, hatred, and racism” are not only against the principles of UEFA but also for the reason they should “punish those responsible” for the unpleasant chants. It was released online as a letter. In the letter, the incident itself is narrated in somewhat detail along with the time point at which the chant was heard – 58. Further it accuses an unidentified Albanian player to have reignited the situation by using a megaphone to ‘incite’ the rest ‘with the same abusive chant after the match’. Serbia in their letter also complained about a foreign forward Mirlind Daku but UEFA is also investigating the ‘’alleged inappropriate behaviour’’ of the Albania player. In this regard, UEFA has have sanctioned both the Serbian and Albanian soccer associations because of the rowdy conducts exhibited by their fans as soon as the tournament began last week. Four incidents occurred during Albania's opening match against Italy, for which the Albanian Football Association was fined: displaying of firework, throwing objects, encroaching into the playing field, and the usage of words considered to be scornful and violent for any sporting encounter. As for these cases, Albania was fined a total of € 37,375, which is equivalent to $40,000. Kosova’s football association submitted a letter to UEFA protesting a flag and some slogans that are alleged to have been chanted during the match after their 1-0 loss to England on Sunday. The cries were condemned as “chauvinistic and racist” in the statement. Serbia was thus fined for 14,500 euros (about $15,500) by UEFA for the fans ‘action of throwing objects and for what was described as transmitting a provocative message not fit for a sports event.
