Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama has now been officially selected by International team captain Mike Weir as his fifth and last assistant for the 2017 Presidents Cup. Also, Maruyama will be a useful asset to Weir and his team when participating in the high-profile match against the United States to be held from September 26-29 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club.
A powerful international side featuring no players from Europe goes up against a 12-man American side in the highly ranked biennial Presidents Cup. This year’s competition is expected to be very exciting because for the first time, Weir, who has an international team, plans to challenge the reigning champions – the U. S.
Adding Maruyama is a strategic decision that would help the international team to prepare better, as she has lots of valuable experience and vision. This is a crucial event, which will be held on one of the most popular golfing venues globally, and all attention will be turned to this event as the main day draws near.
He is one of only six players in the history of the Presidents Cup to go undefeated, 5-0-0.
Canada's Weir, the 2003 Masters champion, said on Wednesday, “I am thrilled to announce Shigeki as my fifth captain’s assistant for the 2024 Presidents Cup. His record in this event speaks for itself but, more importantly, he adds a trusted voice in our team room and is someone who will inspire these 12 players through his unwavering support and dynamic personality.”
Shigeki Maruyama is recognized as one of the leading personalities in the golf industry; he has been characterized as a successful player with many achievements to his credit. He was successful in three tournament wins while in the PGA Tour; his last triumph was at the Wyndham Championship of 2003. Maruyama is 54 years old, and he was not limited to this particular victory in his career.
His supremacy is evident through his record three top-10 performances in major events. His best performance was a tied fourth place in the 2004 U. S. Open tournament. undefined While competing at the Japan Golf Tour, Maruyama achieved notable success in his career by claiming ten wins. He has also played internationally; he has represented his country Japan in 2002 World Cup of Golf where they triumphed over the American team made up of Phil Mickelson and David Toms by two shots.
“I am honoured that Captain Weir has given me the chance to be part of this special brotherhood once again. I am looking forward to a great week in Montreal and helping to deliver an incredible atmosphere for our players and fans,” said Maruyama,
“Representing the International Team in the Presidents Cup as both a player in 1998 and 2000 and later as a captain’s assistant in 2013 was one of the most valuable experiences in my golf career
The Presidents Cup as a competition modeled on the Ryder Cup is very advantageous to the United States with 12-1-1 score. Their only blunder was at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia in 1998.
