Shinnosuke Oka Claims Third Gold of Paris Games with Stellar Horizontal Bar Routine Amid Final’s Errors

Shinnosuke Oka Claims Third Gold of Paris Games with Stellar Horizontal Bar Routine Amid Final’s Errors

Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka won his third gold of the Paris Games, sticking a perfect dismount on the horizontal bar.

The silver medal was claimed by the teenage Colombian Angel Barajas while the bronze medals were clinched by Tang Chia-Hung of Taiwan and Zhang Boheng of China who had some difficulty during their routines.

Oka finished an incredible day with a convincing win and tally of 14.533 On the same day, he also clinched gold in the team and all-around categories as well as a bronze in parallel bars event.

"I didn't really expect to win a gold medal on the horizontal bar," Oka said.

"I didn't make any mistakes today and I am very happy with my routine."

Oka’s lead was maintained despite 17-year-old Barajas tying his record because of a higher execution score.

Barajas got the same score as Oka, but due to the fact that Oka scored higher on the execution Oka was awarded the top position.

Zhang Boheng, the highest-ranking gymnast, had a flawless routine with some spectacular release-and-catch elements; however, he slipped on the mat during the dismount that required him to use both his hands to balance himself.

Tang Chia-hung of Taiwan, who had a difficult landing in the middle of the routine, finished with the same score of 13.966 as Zhang. Tang's mistake had an impact on his final ranking, even though both gymnasts received the same difficulty and execution marks.

The other finalist in this event was Tokyo gold medallist Daiki Hashimoto of Japan and since he failed to make it to the final, it was certain that there was going to be a new champion.

Since he has the track record of previous victories, Oka did not feel that the burden was upon him at the age of twenty. He said that the team gold had a particular meaning for him reminiscing on the three gold medals from Paris. In the last competition round, two of the Chinese gymnasts tripped, and this provided Japan’s team with the shot at clinching the gold in the final seconds.

"I was just able to perform with less pressure. I'm happy I was able to do so well," he said.

"My favourite one is of course the gold medal in the team final, because that's what we've been working so hard for. It's a collective result."
