After undergoing surgery on his left shoulder in November, Shohei Ohtani is making progress in his recovery and has resumed playing catch. Los Angeles Dodgers General Manager Brandon Gomes shared this update on December 9th (10th Japan time) during the MLB winter meetings in Dallas, Texas, saying, “He’s started throwing again,” signaling positive developments in Ohtani’s rehabilitation process.
Ohtani, who had previously undergone surgery on his right elbow in September 2023, had focused on his batting during his recovery. He resumed playing catch in late March and had been working on pitching in the bullpen since August. However, in the second game of the World Series against the Yankees on October 26, Ohtani suffered a left shoulder subluxation, halting his pitching rehab. Despite this setback, Ohtani continued to play catch during the postseason, but his pitching progress was paused. Following the season, Ohtani underwent shoulder surgery on November 5 and had since resumed core and lower body training, as he shared during a phone conference after receiving the MVP award.
While Ohtani’s recovery is still ongoing, Dodgers GM Gomes expressed optimism, noting that the left shoulder surgery isn’t significantly affecting him. “It’s feeling good,” Gomes said, emphasizing that they are closely monitoring his progress. “We’ll all get together soon and share our views step by step,” he added.
The Dodgers are planning for Ohtani’s return to the mound, but as a precaution, Manager Dave Roberts mentioned on December 4 that Ohtani will likely start the 2024 season as a batter only, especially during the opening series in Japan against the Cubs in March. However, he will be closely monitored, and the team is expected to limit his pitching innings with an eye toward the postseason, where Ohtani’s two-way contributions could be crucial.
