LA Dodgers player Shohei Ohtani made history in his 79th game playing with the Dodgers by setting a new record. Thus, Ohtani set the new record of 10 games with at least one RBI on Wednesday at Guaranteed Rate Field while launching a lead-off home run for the Dodgers in their 4-0 win against the White Sox this week. This hitting streak is the longest that the Dodgers have registered since the start of RBI measurements 1920.
As for the Dodgers record of most RBI in a given season without a streak of hitless games, Ohtani started the day on par with the likes of Roy Campanella in 1955, Augie Galan in 1944, and Eddie Brown back in 1924. Two seasons would be needed for Matt Kemp to achieve that and mark a record of at least one RBI in nine straight games from the end of 2011 and beginning of 2012.
Ohtani matched with the Dodger legends Campanella (1955), Galan (1944), and Brown (1924) for the most straight games with an RBI in a season going into that game. It is penciled down to Matt Kemp about performing an RBI in nine successive games; however this run only took two seasons, beginning from late in the 2011 season and up to the early part of the 2012 season.
“There have been a lot of opportunities with runners on base,” Ohtani said of the streak through interpreter Wil Ireton after the game. “All I'm trying to do is have a quality at-bat, so I think it's the result of that.”
The interactionist and assertiveness and discipline kind can undoubtedly be viewed as the highlight of Ohtani’s June hot streak. This mindset was evident from him in his first time on the battering line on Wednesday’s game. Because of Mookie Betts’ broken hand, Ohtani had to bat lead off on June 17. In a defensive six-pitch contest he had to confront White Sox’s Erick Fedde as the starting pitcher.
“Really, my approach is to swing at strikes and just making sure that my posture and everything else is lined up,” Ohtani said.
Ohtani bided his time as he worked the count to 2-1 and then 3-2, both his strikes, on cutters located at the top of the zone that did not faze him. Later in the at-bat, Fedde tried another cutter in a similar pitch location with a full count, but Ohtani was ready. Martinez hit the ball with a furious exit velocity of 113. 9mph while hitting a strong and long swing that recorded a Statcast value of 437 feet to right-center field. Showed his there versatility by going 1-2 in the game and also being walked twice. As witnessed in the 4-3 win against Chicago on Tuesday, he did put up a very spirited show. For the first homer Ohtani hit the ball to a few feet past the first base and it sailed over the right field wall for a distance of 376 feet. He went to second base but was unsure if he was able to touch the bag so he joked before running back to ensure he did not miss the bag.
On Wednesday, the home run was just as grand. Ohtani stared at his creation for sometime before he began to run around the bases watching the ball disappear out of the park.
Ranking first in the National League in homers, he is tied for 11 in the month of June. After switching to the top of the order, he has upped his total by six, and he is so much more than a centre fielder.
During his 10-game RBI streak, his stats are phenomenal: a .444/.563/1.194 slash line, eight homers, 17 RBIs, and 11 walks against just six strikeouts. It's a performance reminiscent of video game numbers.
“If they throw it over the plate in his zone, he’s going to hit it hard,” Roberts said. “It's just the discipline that he's showing is making him the most dangerous hitter on the planet.”
