The Japanese superstar is joining the great Michael Jordan in the winners list of Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year, ruling the 2024 edition three times. The win placed Ohtani firmly in the history of sports because only four players have won the award – LeBron James, Woods, Tiger Woods, and Lance Armstrong.
”Obviously, all the hard work has paid off. Maybe next year, I’ll get the award again.” Speaking through his translator, Matt Hidaka, Ohtani expressed his opinions in an exclusive interview with the AP. “I’m very honored.”
“Growing up in Japan, I did follow Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods,” he said. “I would see their accolades and how they were successful in the United States.”
Ohtani earned 48 points on the list to win the award chosen by 74 members of the Associated Press, including sports journalists. He already received the award with the Angels but did it in 2021 and 2023 and so, this is actually his third time.
The past of the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Yearstarted earlier than the world championship: its history began in 1931. That Babe Didrikson has won the title six times now makes her the most unique winner of it all, which is evidence of her unfair dominance of golfer’s game.
Shohei Ohtani had quite a year as the Los Angeles Dodgers replace the sputtering Los Angeles Angels. He guided the Dodgers to the ninth World Series title and was honored with his third MVP title, his first in the NL. Ohtani also became the only player to join MLB’s 50-50 club, swiping 59 bags and hitting 54 home runs.
Ohtani was simply the best on the attacking side of the ball. He hit for a career best of .310 and the 6-foot-4-inch behemoth was unputdownable every time he stood at the plate. He carved out for himself, an esteemed position amongst baseball legends, particularly as a two way player through setting higher personal bests with his homeruns, runners, and home stealer actions.
Shohei Ohtani had stupendous efficiency and incredible statistics as the Dodgers’ main offence during the regular season. But it remained great during the postseason and though he maintained his excellence, World Series’ Game 2 was not fortunate for him. Ohtani injured his left shoulder while attempting to steal second base against the New York Yankees but continued to play in the series.
Ohtani underwent surgery to repair the damage a few days after the Dodgers celebrated their championship trophy in early November. The spirit he showed to compete through the difficult and even when winning showed the unyielding spirit of a real super star.
With Shohei Ohtani hailed as a national hero, there is no doubt that he will be in the spotlight when the Dodgers begin their new year 2025 season with an opening series in Japan. The Japanese star aims to make further progress in his career the season after a World Series win and an MVP season as he leads the Angels to back-to-back titles.
Ohtani is sure to retain his NL MVP award in this case given his unique capability and uncontestable impact. It is clear that people all over the world eagerly anticipate the next step in his amazing career as he begins the year 2025.
