Shohei Ohtani has cemented his legacy in Major League Baseball by winning his third MVP award on Thursday, becoming the first player ever to claim the honor as a designated hitter. The 2024 National League MVP vote was a historic one, with Ohtani receiving a unanimous vote from all 30 voters, solidifying his place as one of the greatest players in baseball history.

Ohtani, who joined Frank Robinson as the only players to win MVP awards in both the American League and National League, achieved this milestone in his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. After undergoing shoulder surgery in September 2023, Ohtani was unable to pitch this year but focused on his offensive game, and the results were nothing short of spectacular.

The Japanese superstar led the National League with 54 home runs, 130 RBIs, and 134 runs scored. Additionally, Ohtani finished second in stolen bases with 59, becoming the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. His .310 batting average narrowly missed out on the Triple Crown, falling just .004 behind NL batting leader Luis Arraez of the San Diego Padres.

Ohtani’s offensive prowess helped propel the Dodgers to the World Series title, as they defeated the New York Yankees in five games to claim the championship. While Ohtani did not pitch in 2024, his incredible performance as a hitter was enough to earn him the MVP award, making him the first primary designated hitter to ever win the honor.

In the American League, the MVP award went to New York Yankees center fielder Aaron Judge, who had a monster season himself, batting .322 with 58 home runs and 144 RBIs. Judge was the unanimous choice over fellow Yankees slugger Juan Soto and Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr.
