Spain's Historic Victory: Triumph over England in Unprecedented Women's World Cup Final

Spain's victory in the World Cup elevates them to the esteemed company of the United States, Germany, Norway, and Japan, all of whom have claimed this prestigious title. Furthermore, this achievement marks a remarkable treble for La Roja, as they had previously secured victories in the Under-20 and U-18 World Cups last year.

The championship will likely be viewed as validation for Jorge Vilda, who excluded almost all but three players that had voiced concerns about the team atmosphere he had established last year. However, it is the incredibly talented players, rather than Vilda's strategies, that have driven this victory in the World Cup.

Spain tore through England's left flank, causing a sequence of turnovers. One of these turnovers directly resulted in Carmona's goal. Spain wrested the ball from Lucy Bronze around the midfield area and floated it towards the left side of the pitch, where Mariona Caldentey gained possession. She advanced up the field, ultimately passing the ball to Carmona, who skillfully defeated goalkeeper Mary Earps by finding the far corner of the net.

England had opportunities of their own, and Earps' remarkable save of a penalty kick from Jenni Hermosa appeared to invigorate the European champions. Despite their efforts, they were unable to convert these opportunities into goals and, in the end, struggled to match the pace set by the recently crowned World Cup champions.

Although the 2023 World Cup final featured a limited number of goals, there were numerous standout moments to remember. These included an exceptional goal by Olga Carmona for Spain and a remarkable and exhilarating save by England's goalkeeper, Mary Earps.

Having assumed the role of coaching Spain's senior team in 2015, Vilda has faced scrutiny over the last year. This period has been marked by criticism, as 15 players expressed dissatisfaction with the team's atmosphere and declared their unwillingness to participate in national team matches until their grievances were acknowledged and resolved.

Aside from acknowledging that the past year had been challenging, Vilda refrained from directly discussing the protest made by the Spanish players. However, he commended both his present team members and those who had been part of the squad during the qualifying period, emphasizing their collective efforts in securing the World Cup championship.

Following Spain's inaugural World Cup triumph, Vilda was repeatedly queried about his future as the coach. On each occasion, his responses were elusive and non-committal.

“Right now, we’re going to celebrate the World Cup,” Vilda said through a translator. “We’re going to go back to Spain and see our loved ones and then we’ll see. I’m very happy for everyone that we’ve made happy and I’m happy our national team wins,” he said. “That’s all.”

Bonmati rightfully clinched the Golden Ball award, recognizing her as the standout player of this World Cup. With three goals and two assists to her name, her impact on Spain's journey to the World Cup championship was beyond quantifiable. Positioned in the midfield, she skillfully orchestrated intricate passes and pivotal link-up play, while her defensive prowess was nothing short of exceptional.

"I'm so proud, We deserve it. We deserve it. We have been working for years for this moment."

Spain had never secured a Women's World Cup victory at the senior level. In fact, the recent Sunday marked Spain's inaugural presence in the final match. This marked only their third appearance in the World Cup, and their previous best performance was reaching the round of 16 in 2019.

Salma Paralluelo was a member of the Spain squad that clinched victory in the Under-20 World Cup last year, marking their maiden triumph at that level following a runner-up position in 2018. Simultaneously, the U-17 team secured their second consecutive World Cup title in the same year.
