Stanley Cup Final Showdown: Panthers vs. Oilers - Predictions and Previews

Stanley Cup Final Showdown: Panthers vs. Oilers - Predictions and Previews

It takes the fans back to that year in 1993 to the final of Stanley Cup and give them overwhelming feeling. Compared to the subsequent seasons, this was the first year of the Florida Panthers and yet, they have no championship title to boast about. Along the same lines, 1993 is important as it remains the last occasion when a Canadian team, Montreal Canadiens, clinched the Stanley Cup Championship. These are historical parallels that anyone who is interested in the final of the forthcoming final match will find exciting and memorable.

This Saturday, the Panthers and Edmonton Oilers will face off in Sunrise, Florida in the hope of putting an end to the extended championship dry spell. Both teams displayed great effort and perseverance, and fighting back from a 2-1 series deficit in the conference final series enigmas their seat in the series. This creates a very interesting and perhaps an historic showdown of sorts as they fight for the biggest trophy in hockey.

"We always believed in ourselves and each other and knew that putting ourselves in this position was always a possibility and it feel goods to have done that," Oilers star Connor McDavid said.

“As far as the way the play it’s a different style than [the Stars],” Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. “Every series is different. They’re fast-paced, physical, have a good power play. We’ll obviously take some time here to have a look at their game. We only saw them twice and it was probably not our two best games that we played against them.”

Breakaways

Eastern Conference Champion Florida Panthers

The Panthers are back to the playoff under the stewardship of coach Paul Maurice in a bid to redeem the team after their five games defeat against the Vegas Golden Knights. That changed in this draft where they boast a deeper and more dynamic roster thanks to key additions in the off-season such as Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The team has been relatively competitive this season in light of some significant losses, such as Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour. This led to improving their roster with Evan Rodrigues and gaining Kyle Okposo and Vladimir Tarasenko into the mix.

Leading to chaos for the teams that will try to enter the ice through their forechecking style. It is worth mentioning that Sam Reinhart, who scored 57 goals, also had a noticeable performance and received the 4th place in the Selke vote, and Aleksander Barkov, the captain of the team, won a second Selke Trophy for his exemplary defense. Sam Bennett is a force to be reckoned with and he knocks opponents to the ground at a moments notice and scores goals during crunch time. Matthew Tkachuk, a former member of the Calgary Flames, is a tall, tough-forward who plays a rough style and leads the Panthers in scoring: He’s also one of the Oilers’ biggest rivals.

Western Conference Champion Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers, for the first time, reach the Final since losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, the same year McDavid was drafted. Many of them won championships in 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988 with Wayne Gretzky. They also had another victory in 1990 after his trade.

The Oilers, as expected, dominate the NHL playoff average scoring chart with three players taking the five top positions before Tkachuk fifth on the list. Leading the team with 31 points, McDavid who registered a unique 100 assists during the regular season is accompanied closely by Leon Draisaitl who has 28 points and Evan Bouchard, a defender, with 27 points. The Oilers’ forward Zach Hyman tops the league charts in goals, having scored 14 goals.

Due to the undesirable start of the season with a 3-9-1 record, Jay Woodcroft lost his position as the head coach. Since the Rangers’ coaching staff appointed Kris Knoblauch, who was the previous coach of the Rangers’ AHL team, the team began to show improvement. With him at the helm, they recorded an astonishing 16-game winning streak and also showed the ability to commit a perfect penalty kill in the last 10 matches. In the moment when Skinner was benched for two games, Knoblauch was ready to make tough choices that only helped the team’s improvement when Skinner returned to the game.
