Summer Slump: Online Sports Betting Hits Year-Low

Summer Slump: Online Sports Betting Hits Year-Low

The playoffs are over, New York is sweltering in the summer heat, and the only remaining sports events are a few. Something drew the attention of the betting community during this peaceful lull: July's online sports betting handle in New York fell to its lowest level in a year.

The New York State Gaming Commission reports that sports wagering in July totaled $1.4 billion, the lowest amount since the $1.27 billion handle in July of last year and a 15.2 percent decrease from June's $1.65 billion.

Don't let the decline deceive you, though; that $1.4 billion is a strong 10–11% year-over-year increase, so things aren't exactly regressing.

What’s Behind the Drop?

The excitement isn't the same in the summer when there's only Major League Baseball and a shaky NFL preseason. Since betting normally follows the calendar, bookmakers typically have little to celebrate in July.

The hold rate, or how much sportsbooks really keep, remained steady at about 11 percent despite the slowdown, which was the same as the previous year.

What It All Means

This is where narrative comes in. Picture a bookmaker's office in Manhattan, with files stacked high and a sense of expectation in the air. Then July comes along, and all of a sudden, everything is as quiet as a Sunday afternoon after a game. Although they are well aware that the main action is waiting until football season, you can sense the operators leaning into promos to entice activity.

This dip reveals something genuine and human: while bettors keep up with the games, their wallets get tighter when the action slows down. Nevertheless, the annual increase demonstrates the resilience of the environment. Even if July seemed like a long pit stop, it didn't stop the engine; revenue is up.

Expect that handle to rebound once the NFL and college football seasons pick back up. For the time being, however, July 2025 will be remembered as the quiet before the storm.
