Takayasu Shows Veteran Mastery to Take Down Young Star Onosato Amidst Injuries at Summer Grand Sumo Tournament

Takayasu Shows Veteran Mastery to Take Down Young Star Onosato Amidst Injuries at Summer Grand Sumo Tournament

On Monday, the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament witnessed Onosato, the rising star, being defeated by veteran former ozeki Takayasu, who was back to his former form.

The 34-year-old Takayasu (2-0) proved his professionalism and ability while competing as a No. 3 maegashira. He won the first combat and cleverly avoided the recently promoted komusubi in the highly anticipated Day 2 fight, stopping Onosato's counterattack.

Ozeki Takakeisho and lone yokozuna Terunofuji's early withdrawal have overshadowed the mood inside the ring at Ryogoku Kokugikan. Along with Takerufuji, the one who won the March competition, and Komusubi Asanoyama, they became one of the injured celebrities.

Terunofuji who is still recovering from injury will not be able to attend the rest of the meet. After his loss on Sunday by Onosato, he was discovered to have osteoarthritis in his knee and a rib injury.

Takakeisho is in a dangerous position after losing to the second-ranked maegashira Hiradoumi in his first match. He is under a lot of stress to recover from his pectoral muscle injury and win at least eight games in this tournament to keep his rank for the next tournament, since he is a "kadoban" ozeki who would be demoted if he doesn't win at least eight games.

Concurrently, 23-year-old Onosato becomes the center of attention. Having conquered the three elite "sanyaku" levels behind yokozuna on Sunday, he is now looking forward to win his first Emperor's Cup. If Onosato's dream comes true, he will have made sumo history's fastest wrestler to acquire this highly coveted title right from the start of his competitive debut. The Summer Grand Sumo Tournament gets even more exciting and intriguing with his amazing journey and his audacious objective.

Having the famous ring name of his yokozuna grandpa, Ozeki Kotozakura, he defeated the top-ranked maegashira Atamifuji (1-1) and got his first victory. Meanwhile, "kadoban" ozeki Kirishima who was about to be relegated, stopped his losing streak by beating Hiradoumi and gained an important win.

Hoshoryu, the last ozeki still in existence, had to face more problems. Hoshoryu was the loser of the push-out in the fight against sekiwake Abi, who has been making waves with his amazing comeback. Now, the expectations for Abi's performance in the tournament have increased because of his constant climb up the rankings.
