With fewer than 20 games left in the NBA regular season, the battle for postseason spots is heating up. As of March 10, several teams in the Western Conference are making major moves.
The Oklahoma City Thunder have officially clinched a playoff spot after a dominant performance against the Denver Nuggets, who were in second place at the time. In a marquee matchup, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander exploded for 40 points, while the defensive duo of Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein effectively limited Nikola Jokić, the frontrunner for this season’s MVP award. The Thunder cruised to a 127-103 victory, extending their winning streak to seven games and surpassing last season’s 57-win pace.
The fight for automatic playoff qualification is also shifting. The Golden State Warriors, who were seventh last week, have climbed to sixth place thanks to a strong four-game winning streak. Their recent success can be attributed to seamless integration with newly acquired Jimmy Butler, who arrived from the Miami Heat via trade. On March 9 , the Warriors took on the Detroit Pistons, the sixth-ranked team in the Eastern Conference. Stephen Curry led the way with 32 points, including four three-pointers, while Butler contributed 26 points, helping Golden State secure a 115-110 victory.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are also making a strong push, currently sitting in seventh place but tied with the Warriors in terms of games behind. Julius Randle, who joined the team from the New York Knicks, has been a key factor, recording three consecutive double-doubles while making an impact on both ends of the floor. Minnesota is riding a five-game winning streak, keeping the race for a top-six finish extremely tight.
