Underdog Edgar Berlanga Promises Knockout of Canelo Alvarez, as Canelo Sends Stern Warning Before High-Stakes Fight

Underdog Edgar Berlanga Promises Knockout of Canelo Alvarez, as Canelo Sends Stern Warning Before High-Stakes Fight

Edgar Berlanga knows fully well that he is the underdog entering this contest and yet he is not willing to let that deter him from dreaming of a monumental upset that would shake the boxing world to its very foundation.

Berlanga wants to be the next big boxing star out of Puerto Rico.Mum. As it stands, a win over Canelo Alvarez, the WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion, in their title fight on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena may well turn the tide in GGG’s career and enable him to fashion a legacy as richly deserved as it is elusive.

Besides attempting to overcome Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2), whom many consider the best in the business, Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) is also aiming to provide an unreal end to the fight, with a knockout before the sixth round.

The fact that Berlanga made the prediction of a mid-fight finish stems from his recent fight that took place in February this year in Orlando Florida where he defeated Padraig McCrory by sixth-round knockout. His aim of providing yet another early knock out finish in the ring is motivated by this victory which he feels has built on his confidence.

“I’m a knockout artist,” Berlanga said Wednesday at a news conference at the MGM Grand. “Every fighter wants a knockout.”

Berlanga’s ascent through the ranks of boxing was immediate and filled with stunning knockout power as he amassed 16 KOs in a row in his early professional years. However, the dynamic shifted in his previous five bouts before the McCrory victory, where he had to fight through all the rounds proving more of his tenacity.

We know (Alvarez is) a legend,” he said. “We can’t just go in and swing for the fences.”

The Brooklyn-born fighter is currently 27 years old and currently occupies the No. 6 position in the super middleweight division, behind other invincible fighters like Christian Mbilli (No. 2, 28-0), Osleys Iglesias (No. 4, 12-0), and Diego Pacheco (No. 5, 22-0). Though Berlanga knows well that he has to fight numerous battles to apply the plan, he is ready for it, his trophy-hunting instinct overriding all obstacles.

In an interview with Berlanga, he said that there is no such actor who has conquered the title of the best Puerto Rican boxer. Although he recognized Subriel Matias as one of the top fighters in the super lightweight division and praised super welterweight Xander Zayas who has an unbeaten record of 19-0, there was always some sort of a void.

In representing his country though, Berlanga was not shy at all. He admits that, due to the lack of his upbringing on the island, he has also felt the bitterness of censure from other Puerto Ricans regarding his inauthenticity. That doubt remains lurking in the background even as he and his team are fêted, which fuels his ambitions of proving himself on a bigger stage.

“That’s all motivation for us. Social media, people out there talking about me,” Berlanga said. “I’ve been in this position. I’ve been at the bottom of the bottom. It’s not easy coming from New York.”

“It’s easy to say (he’ll knock me out). To do it is very difficult,” said Alvarez, a -1,786 favorite. “Saturday night is going to be very difficult for him, that’s for sure.”

As stated by Berlanga and basing on his interviews, there is no person who can be considered the best Puerto Rican boxer. Yes, if he recognized Subriel Matias as super lightweight standout and credited super welterweight Xander Zayas for bearing a MKMMA record of 19-0, then something seemed off.

While promoting himself as a pride of his country, Berlanga, however, did not shy off. He agreed that, despite not being born and raised on the island, he knows what it feels like to be attacked by other Nuyoricans who do not believe that he is for real. That doubt lingers in the backdrop even when he is hailed and rewarded for his craft, which inspires him to showcase his talents on a higher level.

“It gets no bigger (than this), putting my last name in the history books and put the Latin community out there,” Berlanga said.
