Finally, after the Spanish Grand Prix, which he has described as a “silly race”, there may be something to criticize for Lando Norris – it is about how he let Verstappen win. But the British driver tried all he could do to cover up for his mistake and beautifully challenged the Dutch driver right up to the end of the race. The current one is rather a tough task as suggested by his performance as well as that of his McLaren team even though it may sound as a consolation after all.
In the 66 lap tour race, Verstappen strived himself to the best of the abilities in making two attempts to at least slash the gap to his Red Bull competitor, and ended up in the race test in Barcelona a mere 2. Only 2 seconds behind Norris or two seconds ahead of Norris, for instance. However, Verstappen spent most of the time leading this race and it was rather cool to witness this fascinating display of speed and overtaking instead of boring waiting.
Like any self-obsessed and self-critical person, Norris is quick to admit he consciously looks for the balak in life. His advantage over the rest of the pack which was starting from the pole position disappeared within a split of a second and one can only start thinking of the string of curses that Valterri must have let out under his helmet.
Before reaching the first corner, he had been overtaken by Verstappen and latter passed by George Russell to assume the lead position. This was the decisive phase, noted Norris, of this race and of the Conservative defense of the spoils system for which it stood.
In response he uttered something which could have been a less blunt and rude variant of the fairly negative characterization that he would later provide to me. He was, nevertheless, right. This notion was confirmed by the nature of the race that saw the athletes blaze through the track. What a shame it was like I was saying, I should have won but messed up at the start.
Realizing that they had no choice but to struggle, both Verstappen and Red Bull felt quite relieved, though. However, in the second lap Verstappen overtook Russell and in doing so he admitted that their car was not the most powerful.
McLaren was critical in his remark of the opportunity that the team failed to utilize. This coming year, as a rising squad, they gear up for much more in the next two years – a drastic change of tune. As said by the team principal of the relevant team, it was a battle of two equally matched cars, and the subtleties were nuanced. In the long run, this is a significant outcome that will beneficial, for Norris and the team ultimately. Verstappen on his part has acknowledged that the team’s lead that had been evident from the beginning of the season had reduced. Thus, at the Barcelona aerodynamic test, one of the most important tests of the year, the supremacy of Red Bull is not as evident as it was at the beginning of the year.
Of course, the details were relations’ concern, but it was not less significant that the man took the first step. In the first stint where there are only two stops in each race, Russell gained time on Norris and got ahead. That was when Verstappen built a gap in the lead, as the race started unfolding.
Neither did Norris go at his work with any hesitance or fear, as he was well determined to make his best on what he had. He wanted to get a edge over the tyre strategy where one has to stop more and he did this while at the same time going for a string of overtakes maybe to prove his worth.
In the eventful eight circuits Russell, Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton overtook from behind by him. Form the starting of the race the two racing cars of Norris and Russell were inseparable as Norris overtook Russell thrice in one lap and took a lead at the turn six.
Although Norris achieved a breakthrough here at Miami for the first time this year, he won’t be satisfied with only getting the third place. He even encouraged the group to copy a few moves that the other teams lacked in order to clinch a victory. They obeyed him and waved him in and he soon discovered that those little things cost him less than a second on a slow stop. Into the lap eighteen, Verstappen had a nine-second gap and Norris could only launch a second attempt at chasing the leader.
An all-out battle to the checkers followed in which Norris was putting down inventive lap times and clawed within five seconds. Struggling to make any reasonable response to his team’s pressure, Verstappen answered and retained his position until the end of the race. Nevertheless, in the second place with 14 races left on the F1 circuit calendar, Norris was promoted to the second place on the drivers’ championship taking him 69 points behind Verstappen – a margin Norris feels he can overcome.
This had been the margins and the moments that Norris and his group could afford to influence in the coming future. But now, when McLaren and Red Bull are almost equal, if not for being equals, it is small comfort for Norris after the Sunday, which can be described as very unsatisfactory for him in Barcelona.
Thus, Hamilton and Russell ranked third and fourth respectively and Mercedes continued their recovery thus cutting the gap to Red Bull. Leclerc again showed his competitiveness for Ferrari as he finished at the fifth position while Sainz rounded off the race at the 6th position. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri came in at seventh, while Red Bull’s Sergio ahead Pérez placed eighth. Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly both of Alpine rounded out the top ten at finishing positions seven and eight respectively.
