World Champions Spain Stage Comeback to Defeat Japan in Paris 2024 Olympic Women's Football Opener

World Champions Spain Stage Comeback to Defeat Japan in Paris 2024 Olympic Women's Football Opener

The referee blows the final whistle at Stade de la Beaujoire; the match ends on an entertaining note with the Spaniards outplaying Japan in their first Olympic duel.

The first goal of the match was a free kick by Aoba Fujino to put La Roja down early in the match. However, Aitana Bonmati brought the scores back to parity showing her ability and determination. It did not stop there as in the first match in Group C, Bonmati helped Mariona Caldentey for the match-winning goal to make it a victory for Spain.

The reigning world champions Spain came from Japan, the former world champions, to record a victory in the Olympic Women’s Football Tournament in Nantes before the Paris 2024 edition.

Further on, with just 16 minutes left on the clock, a goal was made by a new member of the arsenal, Mariona Caldentey. Spain, gradually, gained the upper hand in the possession of this match in their triumph. Almost two minutes of great passing and mobility led to the goal scored by Caldentey, which embodied all that Spain had been about.

The play, leading to Mariona Caldentey, was made by Aitana Bonmatí, who was an important figure in another milestone in her career – the first goal of the Olympic Women’s Football Tournament. It was curved by Mariona into the lower corner of the Japanese net after that.

Spanish women national team head coach Montse Tomé said before the match “we have an identity and a capacity above any rival we have faced so far” but also noted that “Japan is our strong, a good rival.

It was in the group stage match in Wellington, New Zealand when Japan famously beat the World Cup title holders by 4-0 and emerged as the last team before the annihilation showered on Spain in any major international event.

At that time, Japanese counterattack was sustained and they made a perfect use of Spanish vulnerabilities. Today, Japan moved ahead of the other competitors immediately after Spain was lethargic in coming forward. Spain was relieved to concede only a free kick in the 11th minute of the match outside their penalty box. It was passed from Saki Kumagai to Mina Takana that Goalie Coll failed to handle well ending at a dangerous position.

A thrilling free-kick by Aoba Fujino, scoring in the top corner of the Spanish goal which made the opening goal at the Olympic Women’s Football Tournament in Paris 2024 was ultimately followed by repercussions for the team.

Unconcerned, Spain responded by putting into practice their domination by incessant possession of the ball and also the high-press tactics. Finally after ten minutes, a tactical Japanese defense was broken by a through ball between Alexia Putellas and Athenea del Castillo whose pass gave a beating on Ayaka Yamashita as Aitana Bonmati calmly proceeded to equalize the goal.

Finally, the world champs got an important second goal that sealed their victory. Some future matches include Brazil, the eight-time South American champions, and Nigeria, the nine-time African champions, which will be good tests for them.

In football, only teams that participate in the World Cup will compete in the Olympics and since the end of the second world war no team that has won the world cup has won the gold Medal at the next Olympic games; in women’s football this has not occurred. However, a lot of people believe that Spain, that is ranked no. 1 in the current FIFA Women’s World Rankings would triumph since they stand head and shoulders above the rest of the opposition.
