The leading tennis player globally, Jannik Sinner, made headlines early this year when he yielded twice to a banned anabolic steroid test in March. These tests came back positive, however, Sinner will not be suspended.
The information was released on Tuesday by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) that also mentioned that the case was reviewed by a third party. Sinner’s case “No Fault or Negligence” was the decision made by the tribunal on August 15.
Sinner withdrew from Indian Wells tournament and lost points due to a positive test sample in-competition collected on March 10 at the BNP Paribas Open. Another one conducted on March 18 outside competition also revealed the presence the prohibited substance Clostebol, an anabolic steroid that is banned by the WADA.
The 2020 All-Star game was not played due to protests in Milwaukee Major League Baseball banned San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. for 80 games in 2022 after he tested positive for the anabolic steroid Clostebol is prohibited.
Likewise, Jannik Sinner was temporarily suspended from the tournament due to a positive doping test. However, once the appeal had been made and won, the world number one tennis player was permitted to continue to play on the tour while the case was investigated.
"I will now put this challenging and deeply unfortunate period behind me," Sinner posted to social media. "I will continue to do everything I can to ensure I continue to comply with the ITIA's anti-doping programme and I have a team around me that are meticulous in their own compliance."
The ITIA clarified that Jannik Sinner, the winner of the Cincinnati Open, tested positive for Clostebol as a result of an error involving one of his support staff members. This person accidentally caused the beneficial outcome by treating Sinner's wound with an over-the-counter spray that contained the prohibited chemical. Later, they massaged Sinner.
“ (Jannik’s) fitness trainer purchased a product, easily available over the counter in any Italian pharmacy, which he gave to Jannik’s physiotherapist to care for a cut on the physiotherapist’s finger,” the statement read.
“Jannik knew nothing of this, and his physiotherapist did not know that he was using a product containing Clostebol. The physiotherapist treated Jannik without gloves and coupled with various skin lesions on Jannik’s body caused the inadvertent contamination.”
Jannik Sinner won the Australian Open in January, securing his maiden Grand Slam victory. Subsequently, he achieved remarkable progress, reaching the French Open semifinals in June and the Wimbledon quarterfinals in July. But tonsillitis kept him out of the Olympic Games in Paris, ending his dreams of competing for Italy.
