San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish took the mound in Peoria, Arizona, for his first live simulated game of spring training. The veteran right-hander threw 2 1/3 innings, facing eight batters and tossing 28 pitches. He allowed two hits while striking out three, with his fastball topping out at 96 mph (154 km/h).
Darvish initially threw nine pitches in the first inning and was informed by the team’s record keeper that he had thrown 14 pitches by the third batter of the second inning. Wanting more work, he requested additional pitches and completed the frame with 18 pitches in total. He also practiced pickoff moves during the session to simulate real-game situations.
After the session, Darvish expressed confidence in his performance:
“My pitches had good life, my control was solid, and my breaking balls felt great. I also had good communication with (catcher) Martín Maldonado, so overall, it was a good day.”
Darvish emphasized that his focus during the session was adjusting to hitters’ reactions and building chemistry with new Padres catcher Martín Maldonado.
When asked about his personal focus for 2025, Darvish revealed a shift in mindset:
“I want to communicate more with my teammates. I’ve always been someone who focuses on my own routine, but this year, I want to build stronger connections with the guys.”
