Alex Eala, a Filipina tennis prodigy, is continuing her incredible run. In the Miami Open quarterfinals, the 19-year-old produced a surprising upset by defeating world No. 2 Iga Swiatek 6-2, 7-5.
This most recent accomplishment adds to an already spectacular campaign. Eala had previously defeated world No. 5 Madison Keys, the current Australian Open champion, and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.
After world No. 11 Paula Badosa withdrew due to a back ailment, she was fortunate enough to go to the round of eight. But against five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek, Eala didn't just step up to the plate; she took center stage, made daring shots, and solidified her status as one of the sport's emerging stars.
"My coach told me to run, to go for every ball, take all the opportunities I can because a five-time Grand Slam champion is not gonna give you the win," Eala, the 140th-ranked after her thrilling victory, "I'm in complete disbelief right now. I'm on cloud nine. So thank you everybody who came to watch, and thanks to everyone who's watching from home"
With her accurate forehand down-the-line strokes, Eala regularly caught Swiatek off balance as she blasted ten scorching winners in the first set. She took advantage of the Pole's inconsistency at the same time, as Swiatek made an incredible 19 unforced mistakes.
Eala rode that early burst to a 2-0 lead in the second set, but Swiatek, not to be outdone, found her flow again and won four straight games to gain the upper hand. Unfazed, the teenage Filipina regained her composure, came back with unrelenting tenacity, and won the match with a vital break at 6-5, her eighth of the match.
Eala demonstrated her fearlessness on one of the biggest platforms in tennis by smashing the five-time Grand Slam champion's serve an incredible eight times in a stunning display of domination.
"It means a lot that he showed up. It showed his confidence and the confidence of the Academy in me," she said, "I'm loving the way I'm out there on court. I'm trusting my shots, and I have a good team telling me I can do it,"
"It's so surreal because I feel like I'm the exact same person that I was in that photo, but of course circumstances have changed," said the Filipina star added. "I'm so happy and so blessed to be able to compete with such a player on this stage."
With her parents proudly watching from the stands, together with coach Joan Bosch of the Rafa Nadal Academy and well-known mentor Toni Nadal, the victory held great meaning. For Eala, it was a turning point rather than merely a win. She posed next to Swiatek for a picture at her Rafa Nadal Academy graduation just two years ago. She had just spectacularly defeated the world No. 2.
Eala prepares for a semifinal matchup with the victor of the quarterfinal matchup between world No. 4 Jessica Pegula and Emma Raducanu. She keeps going above and beyond expectations by giving it her all. Her world ranking is expected to skyrocket from No. 140 to about No. 75 as a result of this incredible discovery, solidifying her place as one of tennis' most exciting up-and-coming stars.
