At the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Canelo Alvarez successfully defends his newly won title as the undefeated super-middleweight champion after beating James Munguia in an unanimous decision.
Álvarez is declared the winner by majority unanimous scorecard with the same result of 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112.
To this, Munguia replied sending 170 out of the 663 punches that he landed, while Alvarez answered with 234 of the 536 he threw.
Some people can still argue whether or not Canelo Alvarez can ever knock someone out, this Saturday night only added to what used to be a flame. Nevertheless, given his unmatched ability to perform and impress his fans in the ring, he remains the true man of all world super middleweight titles.
The champion then became dominant, winning the fight in the fourth round and in a stadium that was jammed up by supporters of both fighters.
Álvarez (61-2-2) was able to unfold his full potential, no less spectacular than his victory in front of an ecstatic audience of 17,492 cheering Munguia (43-1) down. At BetMGM Alvarez was pegged as a favorite with minus-380 odds prior to the fight. The fight switched directions in the fourth round as theformer had Álvarez down by a powerful strike that resounded in thering and changed the game completely.
“I took my time. I had 12 rounds to win the fight, and I did,” Alvarez said. “He’s strong but he’s slow. I could see his punches. That’s why I’m the best. I have a lot of experience.”
Contrarily, the pre-fight exchanges became friendly with both boxers expressing their pleasure in fighting in Mexico during Cinco de Mayo weekend.
Álvarez, while holding back his harshest accusations for his opponent, nevertheless, did not spare the detail when it came to Munguia's promoter. After having been a friend of the champion, Oscar De La Hoya turned into the enemy of Álvarez. This resulted indeed to a heated argument on Wednesday during the press conference, where the temperature was very hot, and accusations were made even, almost causing a physical fight.
“When I retire, my numbers will say what position I’m in," Alvarez said. “I know there’s a lot of great Mexican fighters in the past, but I’m the best fighting right now.”
“This win means a lot," Alvarez added. “I’m glad that I gave him this opportunity. Munguia is a great guy and a great champion. He’s going to have a great career. I’m very proud that all the Mexicans are here watching us.”
Álvarez has confirmed his supremacy which has happened for the second time in a row, and during which, man at the age of thirty three is well put in first position when it comes to boxing`s best fighters. In September last year Álvarez decides Charlo, Charlo losing with Álvarez having more power.
Alvarez's record has been unique, with a sole loss among the two fights of the past compared to the current unbeaten streaks of different fights. However, he has claimed that he is superior to any other member of his class, but the fact that he has remained unbeaten in five fights longer than Plant, he has made his statement over the rest with the victory against Plant in 2021.
From round 5 to round 8, Alvarez kept on the offensive by using his ammunition to hurt Munguia on the face. Munguia made a few comebacks, but they could not change the course of the fight the way he wanted.
However, in the ninth round, it was Munguia that succeeded in landing good punches on Alvarez's face, causing Alvarez to retreat and even cornering himself. Surprisingly, this was the peak of the fight, though, as Canelo seized the momentum and unleashed his own flurry of combinations including a quick counter from the corner.
In the final two rounds, Alvarez was throwing more power punches. There were rapidly altering exchanges.
Munguia started to actively move out in the 12th round earlier then he could do but he couldn't change the course of the fight without any notable effect. As if electricity was limited into minute or less, which established so Munguia's superiority, Alvarez continued to show his quality by landing a significant combination on the head of Munguia. Finally, the strikes of many as the cherry on the top wrapped up the battle.
“I came out strong and was winning the early rounds,” Munguia said. “I let my hands go, but he’s a fighter with a lot of experience. The loss hurts because it’s my first loss and I felt strong.”
