The fourth-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome suffered an extreme setback at the UAE Tour when he got involved in a major crash within the first 10 kilometers of the final stage Sunday and broke his collarbone.
The 39-year-old British cyclist remains unsure about his competitive potential for this mostly anticipated last season of his career. Froome expressed in December that his spectacular career could reach its conclusion during the Vuelta in September despite being an Olympic bronze medallist twice and the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España champion.
"A CT scan confirmed a fracture to the right clavicle. Chris will be examined tomorrow (Monday) by an orthopedic surgeon to find out if an operation will be necessary to stabilise his fracture," said Israel-Premier Tech in a statement.
His primary objective following the 2022 Vuelta a España has been to participate in another Grand Tour event. This year his ultimate objective focused on participating in traditional major cycling competitions.
Since his dangerous crash before the stage 4 time trial at the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné almost ended his athletic career he has faced problems in regaining his top performance. Israel-Premier Tech has yet to share any details about injury recovery or provide information regarding their training and competitive return schedule.
