Coco Gauff Roars Back to Defeat Sabalenka and Claim Second Grand Slam Title in French Open Final

Coco Gauff Roars Back to Defeat Sabalenka and Claim Second Grand Slam Title in French Open Final

In an exhilarating Grand Slam final at the French Open on Saturday, Coco Gauff overcame world number one Aryna Sabalenka despite losing the opening set.

To win 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-4, the American, who is rated second in the world, mustered tremendous fortitude and resolve. After defeating Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open final, this was her second major victory.

“I was going through a lot of things when I lost in this final three years ago. A lot of dark thoughts, so it just means a lot to be here,” said Gauff.

“I also felt like this is one I really wanted, because I do think this was one of the tournaments that, when I was younger, that I felt I had the best shot of winning,” added Gauff, “I just felt like if I went through my career and didn’t get at least one of these, I would feel regrets and stuff.”

At just 21, Coco Gauff thoroughly redeemed herself from the emotional blow of her 2022 final loss to Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros. She endured a relentless two-hour and 38-minute duel on Court Philippe Chatrier, ultimately prevailing over Sabalenka in a test of stamina and resolve.

For Sabalenka, it marked her second consecutive Grand Slam final defeat, following her loss to Madison Keys at the Australian Open earlier this year in January.

The agony went on for Aryna Sabalenka. Following her blunder against Madison Keys at the Australian Open in January, Saturday's loss was her second consecutive Grand Slam final loss.

But Coco Gauff refused to back down. The American recovered after losing the first set and answered with composure and accuracy. Meanwhile, Sabalenka made an incredible 70 unforced mistakes as she unraveled in the whirling wind. In many respects, the game followed the same pattern as Gauff's 2023 victory at Flushing Meadows: an early loss followed by a calm and well-planned run to victory.

“To show such terrible tennis in the final, it does really hurt.”

“Honestly guys, it hurts so much, especially after such a tough two weeks when I played such great tennis in these terrible conditions,” said Sabalenka, whose unforced error tally in the final was the highest by any player in a women’s match this tournament.

With the addition of the French Open to her US Open breakthrough in 2023 and back-to-back Australian Open victory in 2023 and 2024, Belarusian sensation Aryna Sabalenka had her sights set on making history and being the only active women's player to win three of the four Grand Slam titles.

However, Coco Gauff took advantage of the situation. In their head-to-head match, she prevailed 6-5, showcasing improved concentration and more consistent performance in a historic matchup—the first women's Grand Slam final between the top two players in the world since Caroline Wozniacki defeated Simona Halep in Melbourne in 2018.

Gauff joins a select group after the victory. Only four players in the last 20 years—Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, and Maria Sharapova—have won several Grand Slam titles before turning 22.
