The Nuggets, who were eliminated in Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals, defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 119-107 on Friday night to even the series at 3-3 and set up a thrilling Game 7 matchup in Oklahoma City.
Denver's offensive engine, Nikola Jokić, led the charge with a nearly triple-double, finishing with 29 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists. Throughout, his poise and playmaking were essential, especially when the Thunder narrowed the deficit in the latter part of the third quarter.
Jamal Murray displayed perseverance and leadership in spite of his illness, finishing with 25 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. However, the decisive factor was Christian Braun's surprising genius. The second-year guard added poise and intensity off the bench as he burst for a playoff career-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Denver was able to regain control after Julian Strawther dropped 15 points in the second half.
“We knew what was at stake,” said Jokić after the game. “We weren’t ready to go home.”
Despite their best efforts, the Thunder were unable to match Denver's intensity in the closing minutes, despite strong play from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (32 points) and Chet Holmgren (19 points, 11 rebounds). Jalen Williams' chilly shooting performance (3-for-19) severely hurt their hopes of completing the series.
Oklahoma City is under increasing pressure ahead of Sunday's winner-take-all Game 7 at home after appearing dominant early in the series. But it looks like the pendulum has shifted back in favor of the defending champions.
All eyes are now on what should be an exciting climax to this series that has been tested by the elements, with the Timberwolves already waiting in the Western Conference Finals.
On Sunday, May 18, Game 7 begins in Oklahoma City. Hold on tight.
