Atletico Madrid suffered a 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo at the Metropolitano Stadium on Saturday as they missed their opportunity to reach the lead position in La Liga. Early in the seventh minute Pablo Barrios received a red card by the referee which reduced Atletico's team to play with ten men throughout most of the match.
The draw between Real Madrid and Osasuna gave Atletico the position of La Liga points leader. The home team showed determination throughout despite playing with only ten men but Celta's organized defensive strategy prevented their chances of scoring. Iago Aspas delivered a calm penalty kick during the second half which led Celta to victory and cut away the final chances Atletico had of winning the championship.
Atletico continued their attacks throughout the game without showing any indication of surrender. The 81st-minute strike from Alexander Sørloth brought equalization and preserved a crucial point for his team while showing their determination. Atletico faces stiff competition from Real Madrid for the La Liga title position due to a single point difference after this game's draw.
"We have to continue and keep working, there's still a long way to go. We defended well, we suffered when we had to. Obviously we're still in the fight for the title. When we were left with 10 men it's very difficult... the team tried everything," Atletico midfielder Koke said.
Pablo Barrios received yet another red card while playing for Atletico against Bayer Leverkusen in their Champions League clash in January. The challenge resulted in a dismissal for Barrios when VAR analysis confirmed his dangerous high-contact tackle against Durán early in the first seven minutes.
Atlético maintained control over the game after Pablo Barrios received his first red card which reduced their team to ten players during the initial quiet segment. During the match the Galician team took control of ball possession because of their extra player advantage while Diego Simeone's side remained organized to create challenges for their rivals. Antoine Griezmann modified his playing style from attacking forward to defensive work with immense commitment that stopped Celta Vigo from attacking dangerous zones.
Aspas converted a penalty effortlessly by fooling Oblak in the Atlético goal to give Celta Vigo their seventh league goal of the season. Diego Simeone made three substitution decisions which brought Alexander Sørloth and Ángel Correa together with Conor Gallagher to power up his team's attacking efforts amid the match.
Sørloth exhibited his seasonal pattern of late game impact by scoring again for the match. In the 81st minute Sørloth destroyed defender Carl Starfelt using his strength then struck an unstoppable shot which flew past the post to make it 1-1. Atlético's defensive players stayed firm in the additional minutes of match time which secured a crucial draw against Celta even though they wanted to build on Real Madrid's early draw.
"It's true we had minutes with an extra man, but we know how strong Atletico are. We're a bit frustrated because we were close to winning. I'm very happy to get playing again (after injury)... we got a point at a very difficult place to go," said Aspas.
Head coach Diego Simeone shared his view about their tough 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo in their latest match. During the match Atlético Madrid performed with a player deficit yet Simeone never gave up attempting to overcome this disadvantage. Coach Simeone introduced fresh players from reserve who eventually led Alexander Sørloth to score the crucial equalizing goal. The Norwegian striker moved around Carl Starfelt as he completed a critical pass which resulted in his well-placed near-post goal to earn his team a valuable point. He commended his team on their steadfastness together with their defensive organization as they showed composure during anxious moments while maintaining their reserve.
“I told the players that they put on a show, that they were gladiators.” Diego Simeone praises
His team “The Title race is as it is, usually the case in important leagues. We are competing well, we are going game by game as we usually do. A pity about the sending-off and a 10 out of 10 to everyone, also to those who came to get a point that today seems like little but tomorrow will be very important.”
Simeon rated his team, “From one to 10, I thought it was a 10. I have seen a team play 90 minutes with one less player very few times. The team defended well, controlled in the best way the attacks of an opponent who plays, who attacks, and the worst thing that can happen is to be down a player. They had no chances except for the last one by (Borja) Iglesias. They scored from a penalty, and it was a penalty. We managed to equalise and we were encouraged to play with what we had left. It’s an obstacle they put in our way, which we overcame and which will make us stronger.”
