Boos were heard in unison showing the audiences displeasure and desire for more provocation. With about 30 seconds left, Jake Paul took off his gloves and made a mock bow towards Mike Tyson, 58.
The estimated 72,000 people that attended the NFL Dallas Cowboys stadium on Friday night could hardly be pleased with this idea as a tribute to one of the most famous personalities of the boxing world. Despite such an atmosphere the bout was not what people expected it to be. While the fight, in truth, reached its conclusion in the eighth round, when by unanimous decision Paul defeated Tyson, the lead-up was not been matched by the punches thrown. For almost a decade and a half, Tyson was in a sanctioned professional fight against a desperate for the attention YouTuber boxer who was 27-years-old.
Intensely felt emotion that boiled the top layer of pre-fight hype subsequently washed out in disgust. Audience also reacted massively and loudly booing since they were hoping for something more thrilling. There wasn’t much effort made to eliminate any doubts as to the legitimacy of the match which was already in doubt before the first round started.
The competition was everything but competitive based on the scorecards of the judges. While the other two judges scored it 79-73, one judge gave Jake Paul a decisive 80-72 lead. Even though the spectacle did not live up to the high expectations, the stats clearly showed what was happening.
Paul rose in the ring and said something to the audience as everyone seated in the stadium began to disperse even more. Only a few clapped in response to His comments, and many people looked visibly bored as people started to leave the area, which did not appear to bother anyone to do with the announcement of decision. I’m inspired by him.”
Tyson growled at Paul and that caused Paul to become more aggressive with them advancing after few seconds of Tyson’s outburst. It also needs to be pointed out that despite being not very accurate when it came to using his fists, many of his punches were clearly wild hooks that went completely unnoticed. Activity there was bold, but it was obscure how purposeful the energy was that time, or how constructive the strikes were for that matter.
“I wanted to give the fans a show, but I didn't want to hurt somebody that didn't need to be hurt,” Paul said.
However, there were occasional moments of touch, and for most of the fight, Tyson was just waiting for Paul to engage. Paul admitted that the third round was a different scenario because due to an ankle injury, he had been sparing very little in the last weeks of training camp. Paul was convinced that Tyson was tired and hence, was getting weak thus he decided to relax in order to give Tyson a working over.
“I didn’t prove nothing to anybody, only to myself,” Tyson said when asked what it meant to complete the fight. “I'm not one of those guys that looks to please the world. I'm just happy with what I can do.”
Paul vs Tyson had set some records in Texas when it came to combat sports more so the gate was a whooping about $18 million. Despite having over 280 million subscribers in the world, Netflix faced technology problems when it sought to webcast a live combat sports event for the first time.
While the Texas Athletic Commission and Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions themselves never officially released fighter pay, the whiskey was flowing on the internet. Several estimates back Paul’s pre-fight suggestion that his paycheck would hover around $40 million. But as per his friend and former two division UFC champion Henry Cejudo, Tyson fetched almost 20 million.
