Japan's Akari Fujinami Captures Olympic Gold in Women's 53kg Wrestling, Extends Winning Streak to 137

At the Champ-de-Mars Arena, the champion of Japanese wrestling Akari Fujinami showcased great results and won the fight for the women’s freestyle wrestling 53kg victory at the Paris Olympics.

Cuek, arriving in Paris with a perfect 130-0 record, finished her Olympic career in spectacular style She beat Ecuador’s Lucia Yepez Guzman in the final using pure technical superiority to defeat her without much effort and win the gold medal.

During the match, Fujinami swiftly took a significant lead earning 10 points while her opponent did not score even a single point. With passion brimming through, the delighted Japanese wrestler embraced her father, her coach, in sheer joyous celebration.

“At the moment, I’m simply happy and overjoyed. I want to enjoy this medal and I’m going to eat a lot of yummy food.” Fujinami said, “A lot of unfortunate incidents can happen on the Olympic stage but I had no fears.

“I don’t pay too much attention to my record, To become an Olympic champion, I have worked so hard. I just want to become stronger.”

It was a very close match as in the beginning, Fujinami scored 6 nil in the first round and took the lead. The go-behind move was the final knockout punch, and this win kept her unbeaten streak going—the longest streak among active wrestlers.

In the men’s category, Saeid Esmaeili secured the Gold Medal in the 67kgs wrestling in the Greco-Roman style that does not allow holding below the belt. This win ensured Iran retained the title as champions of the tournament. it was this win that had seen Esmaeili progress to the Paris contest after a close victory over the current Tokyo champion Mohammedreza Geraei on a playoff. After participating in the contest, the 21-year-old powerfully eliminated his rival, the Cuban Luis Orta 9-0 and left the final and for the gold.

After the Paris Olympic Games, where Orta moved up to the 67kg weight class but could only get a bronze medal following her Tokyo Olympic 60kg gold, she was faced with a new challenge.

There was an intense fight for the gold medal where Esmaeili overpowered Parviz Nasibov in the final. The Ukrainian wrestler, who eventually won the silver medal for his country, started brightly, leading 3-0 in the first period. However, Esmaeili was not willing to surrender just yet. In second quarter he came from behind determined and leveled the score to 5/5 respectively. Consequently, the Iranian came frontrunning and in a close ending defended the lead in a small final minute securing a 6-5 triumph.

Semen Novikov of Bulgaria denied Iran from a second Greco-Roman gold by winning the 87kg final with a 7-0 victory over his opponent Alireza Mohmadipiani securing a silver metal.

Having gained the first point for inaction, Novikov put on pressure and shot to the right that earned him two more points in the first round. In the second, there was no change on his side of the court – featuring two points scored and a step out point to clinch the victory. By means of his head saying performance, Novikov made all doubts to have a shower and took clear victory for the gold with considerable lead.

“I dreamed about this when I was a child to one day be an Olympic champion. The dream has come. For me, it’s enough. It’s a good time to retire, It’s the biggest dream,” the Ukraine-born grappler said.
