Coco Yoshizawa, a 14-year-old from Japan, outperformed other competitors to clinch gold in the women’s street skateboarding event at the Paris Olympics with fans packing the La Concorde enclosure to capacity.
Japanese Liz Akama also clinched the silver position while Rayssa Leal of Brazil got the bronze.
As expected, after the Olympic qualification, Yoshizawa was unbeatable and on the day of the finals, she celebrated by raising her hands up high as she mastered the rail slide to take the best trick and clinch an unchallengeable position.
Just before the top tricks, Akama accomplished a 270 switch front board that was fascinating but was not capable of replicating the same feat in the successive attempts.
Yoshizawa was amazed at her victory and remarked that being able to control her tricks provided her more satisfaction than getting the gold in the Olympics.
The sport was only included in the Olympics for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics three years ago, and the energetic fans witnessed in the urban park are proof of the sport’s popularity.
Yoshizawa had the highest preliminary heat average and brought this high average into the championship round. I witnessed her incredible talent as the girl flawlessly moved through the skatepark eighteen obstacles in two perfect runs.
“Paris is a big city and the Olympics is a very, very big event, and I’m very happy to win,” she said via an interpreter.
Akama was only a few points behind as the five tricks began and she delivered some of her best moves, including the spectacular kick flip front board, and she found it on the second attempt.
Yoshizawa’s fourth trick score of 96 was the highest score she received throughout the competition. undefined
Fueled by a strong Brazilian contingent, sixteen-year-old Leal aimed for a victory that would top the previous year’s silver in Tokyo. She had some mistakes but in her last run she did a kick flip front board and got bronze while the audience cheered for her.
There are so many Brazilian fans here. It’s crazy,” she said. “I did what I could, and I’m really happy.”
Younger skaters dominate women's street skating; just a small percentage of the 22 contestants in Paris are older than 20.
With the Eiffel Tower, Grand Palais, and Arc de Triomphe serving as a breathtaking backdrop, young skaters displayed their talents against the famous Paris cityscape.
TV ratings increased dramatically when skateboarding was included to the Tokyo Games, which was a result of the organizers' attempt to attract a younger audience to the Olympics.
