Jon Jones is taking on Stipe Miocic in UFC 309, may as well be the last match for both fighters. That’s quite comprehensible—they all leave the cage by 40 as the majority of UFC participants, and Jones with Miocic is 40. As for Jones, who is 37, he is approaching the end of his great career, but Miocic, 42, is already beyond the average age of a heavyweight’s peak. Both have produced great performances in the other weight classes apart from the heavyweight category.
Although neither of them has stated that they decided to retire from Mixed Martial Arts, both have hinted that UFC 309 could be their last bout. Brandon Gibson, the training partner of Jon Jones, has described the training camp as if if it were Jones’ last fight. The staff knows they could be preparing “Bones” for his final rounds as the UFC heavyweight champion and hence the seriousness.
Now, if Jon Jones’ bout against Miocic is the curtain call for his UFC career, the manner in which coach Brandon Gibson has handled the process makes fans immediately believe that it is really the end. Gibson said that when he began to contemplate this as Jones last training camp, the idea became inexorable. According to Jones, he has never felt as focused and ready as he has been at the weigh-in, or maybe the ‘Gee’ thinking it is time to retire with a bang.
“Whenever Jon’s ready to retire, I’m right there with him. I’m approaching this one like it’s our last go, it’s our last rodeo.”
Jones is often hailed as one of the greatest MMA athletes, and he has learned almost all that is possible to learn about the sport. Gibson put it into even starker relief, suggesting that Jones might think there is no more challenge to conquer inside the Octagon.
Jones of course, because he is already the freak of all time as he has achieved almost all that’s possible in the sport. He does not have anything much else to say on the list of accomplishment at the moment. But Jones wants to knock Miocic down before he starts talking about retirement. Miocic is the heavyweight champion who has defended his title most often, and whose title reign lasted the longest – 3 times.
Some day every athlete has bringer his/her career to a close, and Gibson know this fact. Even Jones, that attained the peak of his career needs to know when to throw in the towel, and conquering Miocic would be a perfect way to pen the historic account.
“If we get one more after this, if we get two more, that would be a great blessing. I’m also ready to see Jon hang it up. Put the belt up. I’d prefer them to walk away obviously earlier than later. Out of all the fighters, Jon deserves to walk away any time he wants. I’m always going to support those guys.”
“There’s nothing left for Jon to prove. I think he really wants this fight with Stipe. I think this fight will help solidify Jon’s status as that great heavyweight champion but it’s not something we talk about every night at the gym. We’re definitely all eyes on Nov. 16. But each time I go to a practice, I’m approaching it as this is my last camp. I’m giving it my all,” Gibson said, “I think physically, mentally, he could go in there and have five or six more great performances”
Jones may decide to retire there and take his gloves with him in the Octagon if UFC 309 happens and he wins against Miocic joining the lists of heavyweight champions. And before he will go, he may want to do one more bout, maybe a title unification bout with Tom Aspinall.
Gibson, Jones’ coach, will defend Jones no matter what the outcome will be. Therefore, in his humble opinion, as a dominating force and achieving innumerable victories, Jones deserves to walk away from the sport. That selection should go to Jon Jones, according to Gibson.
“Jon’s the greatest student in the game as well so he’s always learning. I think he’s already the most dangerous heavyweight there is and now you add in this plethora of new tools, oh it’s just terrifying. He would be a nightmare to coach against because there’s no path to victory against Jon Jones.”
“Jon’s been sacrificing his body for this game for a long time,” Gibson said. “He’s earned it.”
