Jon Jones: Forging His Legacy, Unfazed by New Prospects in the Arena ‘I came back ready for Ngannou’

Currently in the spotlight, Jon Jones aims to add a crowning achievement to his legendary portfolio as he readies to face Stipe Miocic at UFC 295. However, the question of his future remains: Will he persist beyond this battle to take on emerging heavyweight prospects? Regrettably, all indications suggest otherwise.

In an extensive conversation on the Overdogs Podcast, Jones remarked.

“If the hardcore fans know who these guys are, that’s great, but at the end of the day I have to fight people that the mainstream public is going to be excited about. Because when you’re in my position, there’s always going to be this new challenge that’s younger than you that everyone wants to see you do it one more time.”

Jones has expressed a waning enthusiasm for facing arbitrary challengers within the light heavyweight category, and it's unlikely that he's inclined to take on opponents like Pavlovich, Spivac, or Blaydes in that division. Nevertheless, he did mention a rising name in the UK that has been gaining substantial attention.

Jones offered his perspective on Tom Aspinall, emphasizing his belief in Aspinall's capacity to achieve something extraordinary within the heavyweight category. He expressed that Aspinall could prove to be a formidable challenge for most opponents, underscoring his genuine confidence in Aspinall's abilities.

However, Jones returned with authority to assert his dominance in a different division, conquering formidable opponents of the highest caliber. While a showdown with Francis Ngannou might not materialize, it's important to clarify that the failure of that matchup isn't on his account.

Jones remarked, "The narrative has shifted in some way, with people suggesting I bided my time for three years and returned only after Francis had left. In reality, when I made my comeback, Francis was still very much part of the roster. I could have been his final opponent, but he chose otherwise, and Ciryl Gane stepped in to fill that void."

“I came back ready for Francis Ngannou, for sure. I’m not going to lie though, knowing that I was fighting Ciryl Gane instead of Francis was kind of nice.”
