Kylian Mbappé Sees Red, But Real Madrid Hold On Against Alavés to Close Gap on La Liga Leaders Barcelona

Kylian Mbappé Sees Red, But Real Madrid Hold On Against Alavés to Close Gap on La Liga Leaders Barcelona

After catching Antonio Blanco high in the shin with a late challenge, Kylian Mbappé was first given a yellow card. However, match official César Soto Grado upgraded the booking to a straight red after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor in response to a prompt from the visual assistant referee (VAR). The decision was made quickly and with conviction.

Four minutes after Eduardo Camavinga gave Real Madrid the lead with a fantastic left-footed strike that curled into the net from well beyond the penalty arc, the flashpoint took place.

Alavés had no opportunity of equalizing because Thibaut Courtois stood tall between the posts and made six vital stops. When Manu Sánchez was sent off for a careless challenge on Vinícius Jr. in the 70th minute, leaving the score at 10 men apiece, the visitors' hopes took yet another hit.

Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Jr. started the game on the bench, probably in anticipation of Real Madrid's Champions League matchup against Arsenal on Wednesday, where they will try to overcome a 3-0 lead. Given the huge stakes that lay ahead, it was a calculated risk.

In the second half, manager Carlo Ancelotti finally looked to his star pair in the hopes that they would silence the home team and seal the victory. However, Alavés pushed forward and registered five attempts of their own, while Madrid found it difficult to maintain control and managed only one shot on goal after the half.

However, the outcome maintains Los Blancos within striking distance of Barcelona, who narrowly defeated bottom-place Leganés 1-0 on Saturday. The race for the title is still in a precarious position.

Due to his red card, Mbappé will not play in Real Madrid's forthcoming home match against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. As the squad battles over the last stretch of the season, his absence might prove to be crucial.

On May 11, Real Madrid will travel to Barcelona, a match that might potentially determine the fate of this season's title battle.
