LeBron James Backs Cooper Flagg’s NBA Rise: 'He’ll Be Amazing' With Mavericks

LeBron James Backs Cooper Flagg’s NBA Rise: 'He’ll Be Amazing' With Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks are expected to select Cooper Flagg, a rising basketball star in the United States, with the first overall pick in Wednesday's NBA Draft. After winning the draft lottery last month, the Mavericks were able to secure the top choice, and all indications are that they will be able to get the 18-year-old star.

Last season, Flagg was a standout player for Duke University and soon gained national attention. The dynamic forward was a force on both ends of the floor, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game. Flagg, who was unanimously selected as the nation's best collegiate player, helped guide the Blue Devils to the Final Four before losing to Houston in a fiercely contested semifinal matchup.

"It has been amazing," Flagg said. "It has been a blur since the end of the season, getting the training, but it has been exciting."

Flagg could be just what Mavericks supporters have been waiting for—a new player with star potential to help them get over the disappointment of the historic trade in February that shipped Anthony Davis to the Lakers in return for Luka Dončić.

Asquad packed full of superstars, including Davis and Kyrie Irving, who is recovering from knee surgery, as the third overall choice. Flagg won't be embarking on this adventure alone, as head coach Jason Kidd will be leading the team and experienced shooter Klay Thompson will be offering guidance. James mentioned that he will have a solid foundation of mentorship and expertise.

"It doesn't matter where you're from or if people believe in you," Flagg said. "You have to believe in yourself."

Flagg would be the second-youngest No. 1 overall pick in NBA history if he were chosen first, only surpassed by LeBron James, who took that title in 2003 and went on to have an incredible career as a four-time champion.

LeBron James and fellow NBA legend Steve Nash discussed the rumors that Cooper Flagg would be selected first overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2025 NBA Draft in the most recent Mind the Game episode. Considering his own experience, the Lakers star showed sympathy for Flagg, pointing out the remarkable similarities—after all, James was just a little older when he joined the NBA as the first overall pick in 2003.

James was unreserved in his compliments. The young star's surroundings may possibly work to his advantage rather than against him, he said, adding that Flagg will be "amazing" in Dallas.

"He has the benefit, unlike myself, he gets to join a team that's established, with Hall of Fame guys," James said. "Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, right off the bat, Hall of Fame coach, Jason Kidd. These guys, they can give him the whole blueprint while he continues to learn what his blueprint will be. And I think that's gonna be an incredible thing for him to have. That type of presence, that type of leadership, that type of just basketball IQ and knowledge around him every single day from those pieces. So, I think he's going to be amazing."
