Leganés Ends Atlético Madrid's Historic 15-Game Win Streak, Simeone Stays Optimistic

Leganés Ends Atlético Madrid's Historic 15-Game Win Streak, Simeone Stays Optimistic

Atletico Madrid’s streak came to an end on Saturday when the team lost 1-0 to Leganés at the Estadio Municipal in a game that saw Atletico finishing with a record 83 day unbeaten streak and a 15-match winning streak across all competitions. The home defeat on La Liga Matchday 20 has put into doubt Diego Simeone’s team superiority in the league.

Atletico’s last defeat was on October 27, 2024, in which the team lost to the Real Betis with 0-1. Since that defeat, they had triumphed in eight La Liga games, four Copa del Rey games and three Champions League games setting a new club record.

Shocking Atletico drew for the first time after twenty nine consecutive victories when a goal by defender Matija Nastasic in the 49th minute. Later on, in the 88th minute, by a handball call made on Sergio González Poirrier at Robin Le Normand’s header, VAR granted the squad the best shot at equalizing through a penalty. Nevertheless, for Atlético to build its way back into the match was a pipe-dream as Antoine Griezmann blazed a penalty kick.

Atletico Madrid’s record the longest winning streak in the history of the club, which topped the previous record of 13 in 2012 under Diego Simeone. It also means their streak is now only matched by Bayern Munich 23, Real Madrid 22, Manchester City 21 and 20, Barcelona 18, and Paris Saint-Germain 16 in the best current record in Europe’s top five leagues.

“The team generated enough situations to have had a different scoreline,” Simeone said. “We started with a lot of energy, with key plays in which we could have found the goal. In the second half they made good use of the dead ball and after they scored they started defending better, with humility, and we found it difficult to overcome that. We had that penalty, but Leganés did very well. It was our turn to lose.”

Despite losing to struggling local rivals Leganés 1-0, Diego Simeone commended his team and encouraged them to keep an optimistic attitude. While acknowledging the setback, he emphasized the value of maintaining focus and reminded them that this loss does not define their future.
