Max McGreevy made history on Sunday, winning the Dunlop Phoenix Golf Tournament in Miyazaki, Japan, with a tournament-record score of 22-under par. The 29-year-old American held off a strong final-round push by Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama to claim his first victory on the Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO).
McGreevy, who carded a 2-under 69 in the final round, finished with a 262 total, four shots ahead of Matsuyama, fellow American Akshay Bhatia, and South Africa’s Shaun Norris, all of whom tied for second at 18-under. Matsuyama, making his first domestic tour appearance of the year, fired a 66 in the final round but was unable to catch McGreevy, who remained steady throughout the day.
“It was an amazing week,” McGreevy said after the win. “Putts just continue to fall, and I feel like I got lucky here and there throughout the week. I was happy I was able to play my best golf when I came over here.”
McGreevy’s 22-under total broke the previous tournament record of 21-under set in 2016 by American Brooks Koepka. Over the course of the four rounds, McGreevy only registered one bogey — a blemish on the 17th hole of the opening round — showcasing his consistency and skill throughout the event.
