Real Madrid delivered a dominant performance at the Santiago Bernabéu, securing a 3-1 victory over Manchester City in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout playoff. With a 6-3 aggregate score, Madrid comfortably advanced to the Round of 16, thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Kylian Mbappé. The home side showcased their attacking prowess and defensive resilience, leaving City with no chance of a comeback.
Madrid entered the match with a slight advantage, having won the first leg 3-2 in Manchester. They welcomed back Antonio Rüdiger to the starting lineup, while Lucas Vázquez and David Alaba returned to the bench. On the other hand, City had to make do without their star striker Erling Haaland, who started as a substitute. Omar Marmoush led the attack in his absence, but the visitors struggled to pose a serious threat.
The match started in Madrid’s favor as they quickly took control. In the 4th minute, Raúl Asensio delivered a long ball over the top, allowing Mbappé to race past the defense and chip the ball over City goalkeeper Ederson, making it 1-0. City’s troubles worsened moments later when John Stones suffered an injury and had to be replaced by Nathan Aké. Madrid continued to dominate, doubling their lead in the 33rd minute when Jude Bellingham set up Vinícius Júnior, whose pass found Rodrygo. The Brazilian laid it off for Mbappé, who finished expertly to make it 2-0.
With a commanding 5-2 aggregate lead, Madrid remained in control after halftime. Their only setback was Bellingham receiving a yellow card in the 38th minute, ruling him out of the first leg of the next round. The final blow to City came in the 61st minute when Mbappé cut inside from the right wing and fired a powerful left-footed shot past Ederson, completing his hat-trick. Though City managed a late consolation goal through Nico González in stoppage time, it was too late to change the outcome.
Real Madrid’s convincing victory sends a strong message to the rest of Europe as they continue their pursuit of another Champions League title. Meanwhile, Manchester City, the reigning champions, exit the tournament in disappointment, unable to overcome Madrid’s clinical finishing and solid defense.
