After the 3-1 defeat of Lionel Messi’s team in the MLS playoffs to Atlanta United this week FIFA decided to pave a different route to the Club World Cup for Inter Miami..
Miami was shocked out of the competition with a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Atlanta even though they had dominated the Eastern Conference. Miami, who had previously triumphed in the past 2-1, lost by same scoreline to Atlanta United in the last match of the series, where the latter was ninth placed team and only had 34 points behind Miami to earn a playoff place.
Bartosz Slisz scored a decisive header in the 76th minute to give Atlanta a stunning upset, even though Messi scored a goal for Miami. This spectacular playoff elimination was as a result lack of ability by Miami’s highly populated list of stars to contain the underdogs.
Miami’s journey continues: I have a very strong feeling that Miami still has many great experiences awaiting it. They were the league leaders at the end of Major League Soccer’s regular season, so they earned the ‘Supporters’ Shield, and FIFA’s later decision has guaranteed their participation in the 32-team Cup next year.
They will also be the hosts for the first ever Miami tournament game from June 15 to July 13. The caveat to this, though, was that the excitement for this was quickly dampened by Miami’s surprisingly early exit from the playoffs the following year.
"You have shown that in the United States, you are consistently the best club on the field of play," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said at the tim
"Therefore, I am proud to announce that as one of the best clubs in the world, you are deserved participants in the new FIFA Club World Cup as the host club representing the United States."
This simply raised questions to the already murky qualifying process of the tournament. However, FIFA ensured that Miami was on the list because they were probably eager to have the prominent player; Messi, in the new spectacle. Even though he was unable to manage the team to the playoffs, Messi, who signed for Miami mid last season, captured a minor cup.
Still, Miami achieved a new record of points scored in the regular season without Ronaldo as an attacker due to his injuries. Nevertheless, Miami has an uncommon distinction despite their early elimination: they will be one of only two MLS teams along with the Seattle Sounders to be participating in the Club World Cup.
