NBA All-Star 2025: Inside the New Tournament Format, Team Rosters, and Breakdown

NBA All-Star 2025: Inside the New Tournament Format, Team Rosters, and Breakdown

NBA's best players travel to San Francisco for a weekend of exciting celebrations beginning February 14, the league is changing the format of the All-Star Game.

After rosters are complete, team selection comes next. January 23 saw the announcement of the 10 All-Star starters, and February 1 saw the announcement of the 14 reserves. For the game at Chase Center on February 16, these 24 players will be divided into eight-player teams.

NBA greats Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith will draft the teams on February 6. This year's tournament will take a new turn as each side will be called after its selector: Team Shaq, Team Charles, and Team Kenny.

Rising Stars

The NBA's most potential young players will be highlighted by the Rising Stars Challenge, which will bring together exceptional rookies, second-year sensations, and G League elite players.

Each of the four squads, which consist of 28 players, is led by a revered Warriors legend. A spot in Sunday's All-Star Game competition will be awarded to the victor of this thrilling three-game matchup between these clubs.

The first team to reach 40 points secures victory, while the championship matchup will crown its winner once a team hits 25 points—guaranteeing a fast-paced, high-intensity battle from start to finish.

Skills Challenge

This year's skills challenge will feature four dynamic duos going head-to-head in a competition that puts their agility, precision, and shooting accuracy to the test. Traditionally designed to showcase a player's ability to navigate the court, execute crisp passes, and sink shots under pressure, the event promises an exciting display of talent and coordination.

Here’s a look at the contenders set to battle for bragging rights:

Team Cavs (Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley)

Team Rooks (Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr)

Team Spurs (Chris Paul, Victor Wembanyama)

Team Warriors (Draymond Green, Moses Moody)

3-Point Contest

Damian Lillard, the two-time defending three-point contest champion, is in this year's lineup and is trying to make history. The seasoned shooter, who is one of five 2025 All-Stars competing, is committed to making history among the greats. Lillard would become just the third player in the history of the tournament to win three straight titles if he wins another one, joining the select group of players that includes Craig Hodges and Larry Bird.

The full list of participants is as follows:

Jalen Brunson, Knicks

Cade Cunningham, Pistons

Darius Garland, Cavaliers

Tyler Herro, Heat

Buddy Hield, Warriors

Cam Johnson, Nets

Damian Lillard, Bucks

Norman Powell, Clippers

Slam Dunk Contest

G League star Mac McClung will defend his slam dunk title and try to win the tournament for an unprecedented third time in a row. Three formidable opponents stand in his way: second-year standout Andre Jackson Jr., rookie phenom Matas Buzelis and Stephon Castle. An exciting battle is built up by the distinct athleticism and inventiveness that each opponent brings to the table.

NBA All-Star Game

The redesigned All-Star event will be a three-game tournament, similar to the Rising Stars challenge, with teams selected by TNT pundits Kenny Smith, Shaquille O'Neal, and Charles Barkley. Three teams will be assembled by these basketball superstars, and the winner of Friday's Rising Stars competition will select the fourth team.

In the competition on Sunday, every match will be a race to 40 points, with the winner being the first team to reach or surpass that amount. In terms of the stakes, players on the winning team will receive $125,000 apiece, while those on the losing team will receive $50,000.
