New York Liberty Dominates in Overtime to Capture First WNBA Championship, Overcoming Adversity and Sabrina Ionescu's Struggles!

New York Liberty Dominates in Overtime to Capture First WNBA Championship, Overcoming Adversity and Sabrina Ionescu's Struggles!

The New York Liberty claimed the first WNBA title after they vanquished the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 in overtime on the last game 5. Jonquel Jones had 17 points to lead the Liberty and Breanna Stewart added 13 points, which included the free throws to ice the game.

Despite Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, the Liberty’s strong resisting guard duo who combined for the worse shooting evening, the team stepped up and showcased their character and desire. The victory was thanks to freshmen Leonie Fiebich and center Nyara Sabally who both scored the team’s 13 points.

Lynx’s Napheesa Collier replied on the other side of the floor, making eight points in a pack and rush. Where was New York’s defense? Minnesota capitalized on it and scored 14 of their 19 points in the first quarter by shooting layups. As a result, the Liberty remained nine points adrift and started to feel pressure.

The problem translated to the offense of the New York Liberty persisted in the second quarter as the team was seen cones and missing each other on the floor. The players were becoming annoyed by the laxity which characterized the distribution of the balls which barely reached the targeted individuals.

Breanna Stewart has been confined to taking shots with ease by the WNBA Defensive Player of the year Napheesa Collier, who was relentless in her dominance throughout the series. Partnered with a tough defense from Collier, Stewart was only able to manage five points going into the half. Still an early second quarter 13 point deficit would later show the Liberty’s fortitude, garnering two timely steals which led to a spirited fight that somewhat reduced the margin to 7 points at halftime.

Liberty had emerged a totally different person full of vigor and determination. In the third quarter they switched to a new tactic and starting shooting at the basket nonstop after realizing how hard it is to shoot from behind the three-point line. This agressive stance changed the nature of the match extremely and allowed for 9 more attempts from the foul line.

Jones continuing to lead the team by scoring 15 points at the end of the quarter African powerhouse Nyara Sabally emerged as the one who give the team its much-needed boost. Sabally scored nine critical turnovers and one of them was when she put in the basket that pulled New York to a level playing field. The Liberty was ahead of the Lynx in scoring after third quarter with the Liberty scoring 20 while the Lynx scored only 7.

The Liberty faced some problems in the first half and it took only 7 and a half minutes before it committed three team fouls going into the final period with only three-point lead. This situation caused tension and New York became tense right to the last minute of the game.

New York showed better defense in the overtime and helped each other to make three crucial turnovers. Once again, the Lynx regained the lead with 18.4 seconds on the clock but they remained behind 62-65 on the scoreboard. They were unable to do so, especially when Bridget Carleton missed a three-point shot that could have made a big difference. Breanna Stewart was fouled by Lynx guard Courtney Williams a few moments later, and with only ten -seconds remaining, she was required to foul. Stewart, forced a play under pressure attesting two-shots that was enough for the Liberty to celebrate the win after all the pressure assembled on the game.
