Rakuten Eagles Claim Interleague Title with 5-3 Victory Over Hiroshima Carp

Rakuten Eagles Claim Interleague Title with 5-3 Victory Over Hiroshima Carp

Daichi Suzuki contributed with a two-run homer on June 16 which contributed to Rakuten Eagles’ 5-3 victory over Hiroshima Carp. This win ensured the competitiveness of interleague play in Nippon Professional Baseball for the first time ever in the Eagles’ 20-year history.

Suzuki hit his first homer of the season, a two-run home run that extended the Eagles’ lead to 5-0, in the third inning in the Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi.

"It couldn't have come at a better time," Suzuki said. "I surprised myself  when I hit it and I'm glad that we rewarded all the fans that came out today with this win."

Having scored a home run against all the 12 NPB teams, Suzuki who has played for the Chiba Lotte Marine is testament to an incredible feat.

The winning pitcher out of the seven from Rakuten who threw a start on Sunday was Hayato Yuge. He came to the plate as a replacement for starter Tomotaka Matsui and he threw a scoreless inning to calm the Carp.

Thus, with the record of 13-5 Rakuten, also referred to as the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, concluded interleague play. In the last match of the season, the Hawks were beaten 4-1 by the Hanshin Tigers but they beat Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks by a margin of one game.

Specifically, the Pacific League has triumphed in the interleague championship 14 times, whereas the Central League has only a total of five titles.

"Everyone played a part," Imae said. "It was a complete team effort but if I had to single out one aspect I would say our pitchers really came through for us during the interleague games."

By the time of writing this article, the Rakuten Eagles’ interleague matchup began with a 6-1 loss to the Yokohama DeNA BayStars –which is not very shocking given the team ‘ s rather up and down start to the season.

However, this was the last time up to that specific season the Eagles would appear to be vulnerable. The two next games they played against the BayStars were even more confident, gaining 4-0 and 6-5, and since those games they managed to stay on the same high and continue the same level till the end of the championship.

The Irie brothers contributed to the Eagles’ victory in this pair of matches; the Eagles then defeated the Hanshin Tigers in Koshien Stadium after losing to and again beating the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in the three-game series that followed. For the team, it was the first time on its twenty-year existence that it had tasted the sweet feeling of victory on the historic site.

After successfully sweeping the Hanshin Tigers, Rakuten clinched five victories in six over subsequent games to sustain their excellent performance. Among them, on June 13 they ran a three-game sweep of the Yomiuri Giants with this streak.

"There are many tough games ahead of us within our league," Imae said. "But hopefully we can carry this momentum over for the rest of the season and continue to make progress."
