At the Los Angeles Dodgers’ spring training camp on February 12 in Glendale, Arizona, pitcher Roki Sasaki met infielder Miguel Rojas to personally thank him for relinquishing the No. 11 jersey. In return, Sasaki presented Rojas with bottles of premium Japanese sake, including Dassai and Rokusan, along with traditional Edo Kiriko sake glasses.
The team released photos of the exchange, capturing the two players smiling. When Rojas greeted him with a cheerful “Konnichiwa,” Sasaki expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you for the jersey number.” He then introduced the gifts, explaining, “This is a famous sake from Japan, and these are traditional Japanese glass cups. Drinking from them makes the sake taste even better.”
Rojas, visibly touched, responded with an enthusiastic “Wow!” and admired the blue Edo Kiriko glass, remarking, “It’s Dodger Blue!” When asked about giving up his jersey number, he humbly stated, “As a veteran, it’s only natural to pass my number to younger players. It’s an important part of our culture.” Holding the sake bottle, he joked, “I’ll put this on display at home,” beaming with appreciation.
Rojas later shared his gratitude on social media, posting in Japanese, “Thank you very much, my friend.” Though he had previously mentioned he expected nothing in return, he couldn’t hide his joy at Sasaki’s thoughtful gift.
Known for his warm personality, Rojas has a history of making new teammates feel welcome—last year, he pranked Shohei Ohtani with a pinch-hitter surprise and gifted wine to Yoshinobu Yamamoto at camp. With Sasaki admitting he was “very nervous” about the interaction, Rojas’ kindness is sure to help him feel at home in the Dodgers clubhouse.
