Rory McIlroy finally claimed the elusive Masters title on Sunday, birdieing the first playoff hole to defeat England’s Justin Rose and complete the coveted career Grand Slam. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman now joins golf legends Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods as one of only six men to win all four major championships.
“This is my 17th time here, and I started to wonder if it would ever be my time,” McIlroy said after the win. “I’m just absolutely honored and thrilled, and so proud to be able to call myself a Masters champion.”
McIlroy sealed his victory with a precise wedge shot from 125 yards to within three feet on the par-4 18th at Augusta National Golf Club. Rose, who posted a brilliant final-round 66 to force the playoff, narrowly missed his birdie attempt from 15 feet and settled for par.
Despite a shaky back nine that saw McIlroy drop four shots in four holes, his resilience shone through as he captured his third win of the season and 29th on the PGA Tour. Both McIlroy and Rose finished the tournament at 11-under-par.
Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama rebounded from a disappointing third round to tie for 21st after shooting a stellar 6-under 66, matching the day’s lowest score.
“I had a bad day yesterday, so I wanted to make up for all those dropped shots,” said Matsuyama. “It was just disappointing to end with a bogey.”
Patrick Reed and Scottie Scheffler rounded out the top of the leaderboard, finishing third and fourth respectively.
With this triumph, McIlroy not only collects the iconic green jacket but also a $4.2 million winner’s check — and perhaps more importantly, a permanent place in golf history.
