Ruben Amorim: ‘We Are the Worst Team in Manchester United’s History’

Ruben Amorim: ‘We Are the Worst Team in Manchester United’s History’

Yankuba Minteh gave Brighton the lead early on, establishing Brighton's supremacy and laying the groundwork for United's lackluster performance. Just before halftime, Bruno Fernandes gave the team hope with a penalty kick, but that hope was short-lived. Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter's goals in the second half left Manchester United in shock and raised questions about their resiliency and future under Amorim's direction.

Amorim has overseen a volatile period of managerial tenure after taking over from Erik ten Hag at Sporting Lisbon. United has dropped out of the last six of the 11 games played under his supervision; a poor performance that has led many to doubt United’s capability to stage a comeback or leave a long-standing mark.

“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,” Amorim said, “I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”

Namely, the level achieved by Amorim’s team is somewhat more comfortless, even thoughsit is 10 points above the relegation zone, the team occupies only 13thposition. But after Sunday’s performance, one gets the feeling that he or she might easily be drawn into a survival fight.

Yankuba Minteh scored this goal in the first half of the game giving Brighton the deserved lead and setting the stage for a poor display from United. Just before half time, Bruno Fernandes made a penalty for the team which was, however, cut short. And the goals of Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter in the second half stunned Manchester United and forced questions about their heart, character and future under Amorim.

“Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that,” Amorim said.

This way Manchester United is still not in a proper relegation fight but Ruben Amorim is experiencing the pressure of being expected to get results before things go from bad to worse.

Though he is considered one of the most gifted young coaches in Europe, United’s team has not taken to the preferred 3-4-3 formation well. Amorim is willing to maintain his concept even when he knows that his focus is currently the teams’ battle against relegation.

“I am not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now,” Amorim said.
