Saitama, led by Koroibete, creates history with a powerful statement by defeating the New Zealand Chiefs in Super Rugby.

In a shocking turn of events, the Japanese team, coached by the experienced Robbie Deans, delivered a resounding 38-14 victory over last year's Super Rugby finalists in the second Cross Border contest, taking a commanding 14-0 lead at halftime.

Guided by Springbok second-rower Lood de Jager, Saitama extended their remarkable home record, suffering only one loss since Japanese rugby resumed post-pandemic, with an impressive streak of 47 consecutive wins on their home turf.

Koroibete's try in the 65th minute firmly secured the victory for his team, widening their lead to 17 points with just 15 minutes left in the game.

Featuring nine players with Japanese national team experience and three foreign Test players, including de Jager, his Springbok colleague Damien de Allende, and Koroibete, the Wild Knights dominated their New Zealand opponents in physical encounters and showcased effective attacking prowess.

Saitama, leading in Japan Rugby League One, made a significant statement for Japanese rugby with their commanding victory, showcasing dominance over the New Zealand opponents throughout most of the match.

The recent triumph stands as a historic moment in the rich history of the Wild Knights, underscoring the significance of Cross Border Rugby and pointing towards the potential for future encounters between teams from Japan Rugby League One and Super Rugby clubs.

The Cross Border Rugby marks a distinctive moment, contrasting with the Sunwolves' past involvement in Super Rugby, as it brings together teams from that competition and Japanese corporate clubs in a semi-formal setup for the first time. Chairman Genichi Tamatsuka of Japan Rugby League One envisions the series as a precursor to a more structured competition between the two leagues down the line.

The Cross-Border Rugby, an outcome of the Memorandum of Understanding inked between the Japan Rugby Football Union and New Zealand Rugby in the previous year, commenced with the Blues securing a dominant 43-7 victory against Tokyo Sungoliath at Tokyo's Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The victory for the Blues in The Cross-Border Rugby series had a downside, as their captain, Patrick Tuipulotu, sustained a broken jaw, potentially affecting his participation in the upcoming Super Rugby season. The team is set to face Yokohama Canon Eagles on Saturday to conclude their series schedule at Nippatsu Mitsuzawa Stadium.
