Sharon Lokedi Shatters Women’s Course Record at 2025 Boston Marathon

Sharon Lokedi Shatters Women’s Course Record at 2025 Boston Marathon

The 2025 Boston Marathon saw the crowning of a new women's course record-holder in an incredible demonstration of perseverance and determination. With a scorching finish of 2:17:22, Kenya's 31-year-old Sharon Lokedi swept to victory, smashing the previous record and rewriting Boston's history.

In addition to setting a personal record, her victory ended Hellen Obiri's hopes of winning a third title. In 2024, Obiri, the reigning champion and a powerful force in long-distance running, took first place with a timing of 2:22:37, just seconds ahead of Lokedi. One year later, the storyline completely changed. This time, both runners put on faster efforts, but Lokedi took the lead. Even though Obiri's time of 2:17:41 was impressive, it was insufficient to stop Lokedi's unrelenting attack.

One thing did not change in spite of the intense rivalry: Kenya's supremacy in the sport. Regardless of who won, Lokedi or Obiri, the triumph was still national pride and will live on in marathon legend.

“I’m always second to her and today I was like: There’s no way,” the 31-year-old said. “I just have to put it out there and fight till the end and see how it goes. I’m so glad I ran that fast and she was right behind me. We all fought and wanted this so bad.”

Not only did Sharon Lokedi beat the clock, but she completely destroyed it. She cut an incredible 2 minutes and 37 seconds off the previous women's course record of 2:19:59, which had remained unbroken since 2014, with an incredible finish time of 2:17:22. When Lokedi stormed through Boston's legendary course, he rewrote what many believed to be indelible marks, which had been set by Ethiopia's Buzunesh Deba. After eleven years, the record wasn't just broken. They destroyed it.

Many had predicted that Hellen Obiri would win a third title going into the competition. However, like life, marathons rarely go as planned. Even in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where she finished fourth but Obiri placed better, Lokedi has long been in Obiri's shadow. However, it was obvious that the trend of playing catch-up was over. Driven by willpower and the pain of missed opportunities, Lokedi made a splash and proved she was prepared to take the lead.

Not only the women were in the news, either. Kenya celebrated yet another victory on the men's side when John Korir secured his own place at the top of the podium with a dominant performance of 2:04:45. It was a triumph of strength, strategy, and unquestionable heart for Kenyan sports.

"I have finished behind Hellen so many times, but this time I told myself it wasn't going to happen again," said Lokedi, "I fought and wanted it so bad. I loved every part of this race."
