Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani shared that he was forced to evacuate his home for nearly two weeks last month as wildfires threatened his neighborhood.
“I quickly packed up my stuff in the middle of the night,” Ohtani told reporters during the Dodgers’ FanFest at Dodger Stadium. “When I returned to pick up something I had left, nearby homes were burning.”
Ohtani, who was accompanied by his wife Mamiko and their pet dog Dekopin, revealed that he was also battling influenza while displaced.
The 30-year-old Japanese star expressed deep sympathy for those affected by the fires, particularly the firefighters working tirelessly to protect homes.
“I just really felt my heart sink when I witnessed the areas and houses that burned down,” Ohtani said. “I had the chance to talk to firefighters and found out that a lot of them didn’t have the chance to go back home.”
Now back in his home, Ohtani also provided an update on his rehabilitation process as he aims to return as a two-way player this season. The three-time MLB MVP underwent left shoulder surgery after the World Series, following right elbow surgery in 2023.
“The biggest determinant is going to be when I first pitch my bullpen,” he said. “Then I think we’re going to really get a feel for when I’ll be able to be on a big-league mound.”
