Special Request Denied: IOC Rejects Pacquiao's Bid to Fight in 2024 Paris Olympics

Special Request Denied: IOC Rejects Pacquiao's Bid to Fight in 2024 Paris Olympics

Manny Pacquiao won't be allowed to compete in the Paris Olympics because the International Olympic Committee won't change its rules, which have an age limit that he exceeds by five years.

Pacquiao, who stopped boxing in 2021, hoped to participate in the Olympic tournament in Paris at the age of 45, where the medal matches are set to take place at the Roland Garros tennis complex.

The IOC sent a letter to Philippine Olympic officials on Sunday, clarifying that the age limit of 40 for boxers will be enforced. The IOC is now in charge of Olympic boxing after disassociating from the International Boxing Association governing body.

In 2013, the age limit for boxers in Olympic competition was extended from 34 to 40. This change would have made it possible for Manny Pacquiao to consider participating in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. However, he decided against it during that time because he had also been elected as a senator in his home country, the Philippines. As a result, he chose to focus on his political responsibilities rather than pursuing Olympic boxing at that particular juncture.

We're not sure if Pacquiao would have attempted to qualify for the Paris Olympics through one of the two upcoming qualification tournaments in Italy this month or in Thailand in May.

The Philippines Olympic body had considered attempting to secure a "universality" entry for the Paris Games. A "universality" entry is essentially a free pass given to countries with limited representation at the Olympics, especially those that face challenges in qualifying based on their athletes' performance. This special entry provides an opportunity for countries with fewer athletes to participate in certain events at the Games, allowing for a more inclusive representation on the global sporting stage.

Yet, the IOC clarified on Sunday that the Philippines had achieved too much success to qualify for this particular program.

"Universality places are not allocated to [teams] with an average of more than eight athletes in individual sports/disciplines at the last two editions of the Olympic Games," the IOC said. "This is the case for the Philippine Olympic Committee."

Pacquiao concluded his remarkable career in September 2021 at the age of 42, having participated in 72 fights and securing an impressive 12 world titles across a record eight different weight divisions.
