Stunning Upset: Mystik Dan Triumphs in Kentucky Derby Photo Finish, Outpaces Favorite Fierceness

Stunning Upset: Mystik Dan Triumphs in Kentucky Derby Photo Finish, Outpaces Favorite Fierceness

Mystik Dan is the iconic horse racing hero today. It was a thriller as Mystikan Dan edged out Forever Young and Sierra Leone in a photo finish to win the 150th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Finally, Mystik Dan's victory will earn him a portion of the $3.1 million Kentucky Derby prize money.

The Kentucky Derby winner went from Fierceness’s favorite to in Mystik Dan’s name, who stole the show, with a spirited upset victory in the 150th edition. In the most narrow of margins, Mystic Dan barely managed a win against Sierra Leone and Forever Young in a photo finish so close that the placement could not be pronounced immediately. It is only his 10th time since a Derby winner prevailed by a nose and the first time in 28 races.

This past weekend trainer Kenny McPeek managed to accomplish something phenomenal as he won both the Kentucky Oaks and the Derby. This has never happened since 1952. No one expected a 18-1 long-shot horse, Mystik Dan under jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., to prosper into Derby. Churchill Downs was so anxious that it waited for almost ten minutes to make an official announcement of this win.

Second win for this year, beating the first and the exclusive 2024 Southwest Stakes (Grade 3) held at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 3. Before the Kentucky Derby, Mystik Dan has netted career proceeds amounting to $550,050 altogether.

Mystik Dan has an unbelievable amount of luck and he finished first in the 2024 Kentucky Derby, winning him a $3.1 million part of the $3.5 million prize money altogether.

By accomplish a tremendous feat with this victory at Churchill Downs: he aims to cap the last chapter with 4-Crown sign like the first horse since Justify in 2018 and the 15th horse overall to do so. The Preakness, to be staged at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore this week, Saturday May 18 and Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 8 at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, form the rushed trip that will be next on the line. Of-note is that Belmont Park is still undergoing reconstruction, thus, the Belmont Stakes has been shifted from Belmont Park to Saratoga Race Course.

The purses for this year's Run for Roses are, believed to rise by $2 million, which is a $5 million hike compared to the revenues from the year 2019 to 2023.

"These record purse increases are a symbol of the health of horse racing in Kentucky,” The Chief Executive Officer of Churchill Downs, Inc, Bill Carstanjen, expressed his views.

Complete breakdown of prizes for the top five finishers at the Kentucky Derby:

1st place: $3.1 million

2nd place: $1 million

3rd place: $500,000

4th place: $250,000

5th place: $150,000

Approaching the quarter pole instantly the horse called Fierceness blazed ahead and led the pack out of the gate. However, as the race progressed, the popular disappeared and found himself in the fifteenth position. Meanwhile, Mystik Dan found his last meters and took the win. A clear advantage had been taken by the Mystik Dan but the Forever Young and Sierra Leone were shooting at the outside, gaining ground faster and at some point they were passing it at the end

Fierceness, the odds-on favorite to win the Derby prior to the race, was 3-1 at the 17th gate and that odds never changed until the final seconds of the running. The objective of this Todd Pletcher-trained contestant is to write their own story of becoming the first ever odds-on winning horse since 2018. And after the second gate, Sierra Leone is a bit behind with the odds of 9/2.

The 2024 purse for Derby increased to $5 million from $3 million in 2019, which is a very big difference. The prize money will be split into 5 equal parts, with the first receiving $3.1 million, the second earning $1 million, and the other three placing on the podium.

The spotlight remains on Courage all week, with revenues and fan loyalty peaking higher with every day. Having captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in November and defeating the Florida Derby in March, much was expected of this participant. It wasn’t surprising that Mike Repole who owned a horse with a 0–7 Kentucky Derby record and two pre-track scratches compared the latest runner to the greatest horses in the history of the sport.

"He's a very chill horse,"  During an interview on Saturday, Repole revealed. "He sits in the barn very unassuming and then he goes on that track. He's Kobe Bryant in Game 7 or it's Tom Brady in the Super Bowl."
