Sugar Bowl Postponed Following Deadly New Year’s Attack in New Orleans

In light of a fatal shooting of a policeman on Bourbon Street in New Orleans in the past weekend, in a college football play-off staple event that was scheduled for a normal Friday night Sugar Bowl quarter final between Georgia and Notre Dame will be played on a Thursday.

"The Sugar Bowl Committee has a 90-year history of being a good corporate citizen for the city of New Orleans, and that's why this tragedy hurts us as much as anybody right now," Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said, "All parties and all agree that it's in the best interest of everybody and public safety that we postpone the game."

Organizers had the game moved back by 24 hours earlier but with intervention of Notre Dame, Georgia and College Football Play Off local authorities advanced the timing by 4 p.m instead of late evening.

Event coordinator Hundley emphasized that officials are committed to ensuring the rescheduled game offers "a safe, efficient, and enjoyable experience for everyone attending tomorrow."

The University of Notre Dame declared in a statement that it was, "working with law enforcement and others to determine the full scope and impact of the tragedy."

"The postponement will allow for additional security resources to be deployed in order to meet the typical standards for a major event at the Caesars Superdome," The statement emphasized that in the wake of the deadly incident on Bourbon Street, a number of officers had been transferred to assist with the inquiry.

A student from the state of Georgia was among the injures, in critical condition, this was later confirmed by the head of the university. Meanwhile, Notre Dame representatives ensured protection of each of their staff and squad and their presence on the field was confirmed.
